A couple of years ago I met someone whose favourite Urasawa work was Pluto. I had only read 20th Century Boys and Monster, and I loved it. But I didn’t know the span of Urasawa’s genius until I read Pluto. Pluto was loosely adapted from Astro Boy, a character beloved by many probably even when I wasn’t even born. This is kind of the grown-up, adult, morally challenging version of Astro Boy. The main character itself isn’t Astro Boy (Atom) in this book, but he played a great part in it. Pluto asks the question, “Can robots feel?” and took very in depth delve on the question. We see various versions of future robots that are maybe outside of our everyday imagination. Pluto is genius, the story revolves around robots but isn’t lacking emotions, or empathy whilst we read it. This is the kind of manga I’m looking forward to read in the future.

5/5 SPOILERS as one of the greatest robots in the world, the way he died under the hands of a low-level child robot can be bewildering to others, but that scene is actually emotional and quite fitting, i guess? the way he thought of his son that he forgot for years at that moment, and the way he didn't even resist and just let that child robot kill him is quite tragic. seeing these robots express their hatred, pain, grief and sadness is getting to me and they seemed more human to me than most of the humans in this story. this volume is quite heavy and i don't know how the story will progress from here, but this has to be one of my favorite volumes from this series.

5/5 “You know why humans have to build monuments like this, Gesicht? Because they forget. They put them up to remember...before their memory fades" this volume has a little bit of plot twist as to who's behind the assassination of three out of the seven top AIs and the people who supports the robot law. it was honestly unexpected but it makes sense. atom, the little boy in the cover, was introduced and said to be one of the most, if not the most, highly developed robot. but for me, he's just an adorable, smart kid who acts more like a human than humans themselves. i'm getting a bit attached to him but i'm afraid for him because he could be the next target. there are talks about memories here, and whether gesicht's memories are altered or not, it hasn't been proven yet. but even he has doubts about his own memories. the plot is getting deeper and i'm loving this so much!

5/5 not only gesicht, even atom is now being targeted too!!! this is so freaking engaging!! so many mysterious keywords i've got to remember that are currently unknown and it's slowly unraveling the plot. the bits and pieces of what happened in the war years ago are starting to come together and we're slowly discovering who the enemy is. though overall, everything is still vague, but this is still so good!!

5/5 wow, this is so good! didn't expect to get emotional in the very first volume. robots and humans have equal standings in this series but so far, the robots were more empathetic than most humans. that little segment about north no. 2 made me tear up. very much excited for the next volumes this is my second urasawa series, with the first being the 20th century boys, and i liked that series a lot! the art is amazing with the typical 'urasawa style'. it's also very fitting to the story. i hope i'll love this as much as 20th century boys, if not more!

5/5 EPSILON 😭😭 i said from my last review that volume 6 might be my favorite volume in this series, but this volume just surpassed that. i really cried. my heart is aching because of the raw emotions i've seen. hit me so hard, maybe as hard as north no. 2 arc or maybe even more. i've said that i loved atom because of his innocence and kindness, but epsilon is on another level. he's so compassionate and his love for the children he adopted is so genuine that i have real tears while looking at them. this is an epsilon volume and i personally think that this is the heaviest volume, emotionally. it left me empty and i just wished the author gave us more of this wonderful soul. this is so tragically beautiful and i love this so much! i declare that aside from atom, epsilon is my favorite character in this series.

5/5 this manga series is just so good! SO GOOD! i just loved every part of this. the little bit of plot twist at the end is something i didn't expect but it made sense. the plot itself is not very long but it's deep and complex and the emotions this series brought just hit so hard. the characters' personalities are realistic. either humans and robots, they perfectly represented the diiferent human emotions in reality. the ending is very straight to the point, with no unnecessary scenes. i do think that 8 volumes are just enough for the plot, not too long and not too short either. i never expected to cry when i first picked this up but i did and the impact on me is huge. i really had a wonderful reading experience. this has a really solid beginning and an equally solid ending, which you could not see in every stories and i'm glad i was able to read this. i very much understand why this manga series is so highly acclaimed. a masterpiece, indeed! i can confidently say that this series is now included in my top manga series i've ever read. and since i'm researching things about this manga, i just discovered that netflix will soon release an anime adaptation of this series! i'm so freaking excited to see the story and the characters come to life! i highly recommend this manga! this is such a short read but you will received more than you expected.

Urasawa means: giant vertical imagination, crab bucket mentalities and evil vizier shit you hiss aloud at, hasty sentiment, 10 declarations per volume, gut punches, that nose on 20 characters. Bad things to good robots.
