News from Tartary A Journey from Peking to Kashmir

Peter Fleming2001
One of the true epics of adventure. With his travelling companion, Eva Maillart, and motivated largely by curiosity, Fleming set out across war-torn China, to journey through Sinkiang, China's most westerly province. When they began their journey in February 1935, it was eight years since any traveller had crossed this inhospitable area, and those who had had the courage to venture there seldom left alive. Beautifully written and superbly observed, this is not simply a portrayal of a mysterious and beautiful part of the world, but also a marvellous insight into the last days of the Great Game, when Britain and Russia still faced each other across a Central Asia in a state of anarchy. It is a magnificent travelogue by one of the last and greatest adventurers of Empire.
