Voices of American Muslims 23 Profiles : Breaking a Long Silence Since 9/11, 23 American Muslims from All Levels of Society Speak Up about Islam, Our Nation, 9/11, Its Effects on Their Lives, and Their Hopes for the Future
In the days following September 11, 2001, little has been heard from American Muslims, who have suffered from backlash, suspicion and misunderstanding. Over six million in number, they remain unknown to most Americans. Who are they? Where do they live? What do they do? In this long-overdue book, American Muslims from all walks of life introduce themselves and the many faces of Islam in America. These individuals include the head of New York's largest mosque, an actress, a cabdriver and many others. These first-person narratives, drawn from personal interviews conducted by the author, are frank and offer insights rarely experienced in most Americans' relations with their Muslim neighbours. Photographs of the interviewees enrich this work.
