The Sacrifice of Sunshine Girl

The Sacrifice of Sunshine Girl

Sunshine Griffith is stunned—as is her boyfriend Nolan, and her adoptive mom Kat—to learn that she's a "luiseach": one of an ancient race of creatures who live among humans, protecting them from dark spirits and helping them move on to the afterlife. Now her powers are fully awakened, and having survived an abyss full of demons at the end of Book Two, Sunshine Griffith must figure out who--or what--as been organizing the forces of darkness against her. Nolan discovers that Sunshine's death would trigger a calamitous event, and that the fate of all civilization is depending on her survival. When an unexpected event unleashes a fierce war between the luiseach and the demon army, Sunshine will learn a shocking truth about herself, and what sort of sacrifice is required for her to save the world.

I expected very little going into this, since the first two books were very meh, and I was 1000% correct. This series follows a girl named Sunshine, who has magical powers and fights demons. Sounds cool, but she has a serious case of "I'm not like other girls" syndrome that is ten tons of YUCK. Sunshine is incredibly naive, but sometimes tries to act all tough and hard, and I just don't love her attitude! She is in no way a compelling character to read about, because it seems like things just happen to her. She doesn't have any drive to do things herself. All the other characters are also incredibly flat. I wish her parents, friends, boyfriend, and ESPECIALLY the villain were more than one note wonders, but they're not. There was so much potential for the villain to be multilayered and really interesting, and none of that was explored at all. This book series is loosely based on a web series called The Haunting of Sunshine Girl. As it went on, the books diverged more and more from the web series, which I did like. I didn't want to relive the exact same story, just in book format. (cough I'm looking at you, Carmilla) I really like the web series, especially the earlier seasons, so if this type of story is interesting to you but you're put off by my review, go check out the series instead! I wholeheartedly recommend it!

** spoiler alert ** SOOO GOOOOD!! The last book, it has a great ending, whether cheesy or no. It constantly made me think that there was going to be a sad ending, but it was good!!
