Before reading this book, I was a bit tired of using World War II as a backdrop for novels. Jenoff, however, offers a fresh perspective in a beautifully written novel.

Unbeknownst to me I read the prequel to a series by Pam Jenoff and loved it! I usually stray away from series but I wanted to continue with this one as I found the next book the next day in an independent bookshop. .

This one follows some characters from the prequel like Krysia, who is now back in Poland and Georg Richwalder who is a commanding officer in Poland for the Nazi regime. We are also introduced to Emma, Krysia’s niece on her husbands side. Emma is a Jewish woman living in Poland and wife to a resistance fighter. Her husband needs to go underground as he is wanted by the Nazi’s and is Jewish. Emma moves in with his aunt and consumes a Catholic Polish identity to say safe. Emma is recruited by Kommandant Richwalder to work as his personal secretary. While on the inside Emma is able to gather important information to feed to the resistance group. .

It’s a dangerous time in Poland and Emma has a dangerous job. She is not only trying to protect herself, but her husband, Poland and the future of the Jewish legacy who is also hiding with her at Krysia’s house. .

There are so many twists in this book and there is even a mole in the resistance group! I thought I knew who it was but I was wrong and there is a whole other story line I’m so surprised by! This book kept me glued to the end and now I desperately want the third book! 
If you enjoy fast paced historical fiction with lots of conspiracies and secret spy work then pick this one up!
