I absolutely loved listening to Patrick Stewart regale his listeners with tales of his history. My daughter enjoyed it too but for comforting reasons to help her fall asleep at night. Sir Patrick does have a very soothing sound. Fair warning, if you listen to it via audiobook it is a 19 hour experience. 

In the beginning he talked of his childhood growing up in poverty and his father’s abusive behavior towards his mom.  He talked fondly of all the friends he’s made throughout his career and intimately discussed his romantic life. Failures included. He never had a single sour word to say about anyone he’s crossed paths with even if he described these individuals as being less than pleasant with him. 

If you are expecting nothing but Trekkie news you might be disappointed. While Patrick does recall his days of working with the cast and crew of Star Trek he doesn’t necessarily speak of it as though his entire life revolved around it. In fact, he mentions a few times how he had tried many times to put Jean Luc Picard to rest but was always persuaded to continue on. His X-Men days were referenced even less. Having only spoken of his bromance with Ian Mckellen.

Patrick said that when he was young he was always drawn to older folks and loved listening to them share their war stories. He said he felt older and part of that may have stemmed from the premature balding but when he became older he felt forty and still does. I enjoy hearing of other people’s live too Patrick.

Making It So: A Memoir is an insightful look into the life of an actor that most of us would recognize as either Jean-Luc Picard or Charles Xavier.  This book, however, illustrates that Patrick Stewart has played many more roles in his life as an actor and a man and gives the reader a peek into both.  From poverty and abuse in his early life, to young Shakespearean actor trying to find his way among older veterans, to successful television and movie star, this memoir takes an honest look at a life well lived but not without heartache and tragedy.  For those with little knowledge of the world of English theater, the narrative will either be an eye-opener or unknown territory, but Stewart's storytelling makes it all entertaining.  Overall, Making It So: A Memoir is a well written, engaging story about the life of a unique individual.
