The Hidden Places of the Lake District and Cumbria

The delightful county of Cumbria in which the Lakes reside is England's second largest county, but surprisingly has a relatively small population of only 490,000 people which is only slightly more numerous than the city of Leeds. The Lake District is most famous for its impressive mountain scenery but also encompasses green rolling hills, fast flowing rivers, deep lush forests and of course the enchanting and languid lakes. Below the fells, peaceful country lanes meander through beautiful little hamlets and tiny rural villages, many steeped in history. This wonderful scenery is of course celebrated by the "Lake Poets" - Wordswoth, Coleridge and Southey. Apart from the Lake District, Cumbria offers the visitor gentle moorland, craggy coastal headlands, scattered woodlands and a fascinating history and cultural heritage.
