SHORT STORIES. The theme of these stories is death: coming in a variety of ways and for the strangest of reasons. The victim of the titular story endures an horrendous rape and left for dead. Against everything the reader will hold as reasonable and right, the assailant is cleared. Then what? How is it possible that Justice can be thwarted? Well, maybe it isn't. Read on. In 'Murder in the Abbey', Lord Newton is heir to a fallen and ne'er-do-well aristocratic family, and will do anything to restore the family fortune, except honest work. He's a voracious lecher, and when one of his victims turns litigious, his mother steps in, disastrously. The last story, 'The Pick-up', focuses on Lance Harvey, an architect, is content with life until he comes across Helen, an actress. They are instantly smitten with each other, but not enough to contemplate divorce or career changes. How can this circle is squared?
