I really wanted this just to be a fun steampunk story since that is how I remember the first book in this series but unfortunately this just missed the mark. 

I immediately got really frustrated with how this male author wrote Hester. First of all, everyone (including herself) considers her the ugliest person in the history of the world, this got old very quickly. Her second personality trait is that she is angry and finally her third personality trait is that she needs Tom. Just ugh

Freya and Caul as new characters were fine I guess. The plot was very much non-existent for the most part. But my favourite part I guess is a spoiler so read ahead only if you want.

We love teen pregnancy, especially when Hester literally kisses Tom maybe twice this whole book and then whoops she's pregnant - that'll be a fun plot point for the third book. I wonder how many discussions there will be about how ugly the baby might be because of her mum (even when birth doesn't work like that but I doubt Philip Reeve knows enough about females to know any better).
