Very light and fluffy contemporary novel. Very easy to get through and it was only 99 cents. Although I wish we got more of the friendship aspect between Lisa and Tony because in all honesty I had no idea why she decided she was in love with him.

I love a good novella. Whether it’s a standalone or part of a series, if it’s well-written and the characters are developed, I’m all over it. I absolutely breezed right through this one. It was the first of Piper Shelly’s books that I’ve read, but I assure you it won’t be the last.

Play With Me is the story of Liza, Tony and Ryan. Liza and Tony are best friends. Liza’s in love with him and decides to tell him. She’s incredibly disappointed to find out he’s dating someone else. (And boy, this girl is a piece of work!) In the midst of all this, Liza tries out for the soccer team Tony’s on so she can spend more time with him. She winds up meeting Ryan (who is adorable!) and finds herself attracted to him, but still holding out for Tony.

I’ll be honest, I did not like Tony at all. Immediately. He had a totally sketchy vibe to him and I couldn’t understand what Liza saw in him. But, Liza was blinded by “first love” … and who hasn’t been there before? While she saw only his good qualities, I pegged him as a totally not worth it jerk straight away. I’d say I wish I had been wrong, but if I had been, Ryan wouldn’t have been in the picture. And I really liked Ryan.

I do have to say that there was one thing about this book that really bothered me. That was the fact that Liza’s supposed best friend Tony abandoned her in a bedroom at a wild party. That’s not very good best friend behavior. That alone told me everything I needed to know about his character. Granted, nothing happened, but it was a terribly poor choice, even if he was trying to get laid by someone else. Totally abhorrent and irresponsible. Ok, I’m glad I got that off my chest. 

This was a sweet book with characters that were remarkably well-developed given the length of the book. One thing I love about novellas is there isn’t a whole lot of downtime. The story flows quickly and I get hopelessly sucked in, just like I did with this one. I was intrigued by soccer captain Ryan as soon as he appeared in the book. Unlike Tony, he seemed to genuinely care about Liza and was concerned about her well-being. I never bought him as the jerk jock. Ryan’s the sole reason this book gets the extra half star that bumped it to four. 

If you’re looking for a quick, sweet and cute (though I hate using that word) book, I highly recommend this one. I have the second book in the series on my Kindle already and I can’t wait to read it! It’s from Ryan’s perspective. Eeee!

After reading a small blurb on a friends book blog, I was excited to see that Play With Me was free on Amazon. It seemed like the perfect freebee for a day spent sitting outside in the sunshine and reading a book filled with fluffy goodness. Nothing says Jessica’s Weakness like fluffy reading and sunshine.

Most of the people I’ve talked to had great things to say about this book and I was startled to find that I didn’t like it at all. In fact, it was so disappointing to me that I deleted it from my Kindle straight away. What is it that went wrong? I’m not entirely sure. I can’t place it off the top of my head.

There was just something missing from the story. It didn’t all mesh well. It was too fast, too lacking something that it made it impossible for me to want to finish it. Play With Me held a lot of promise but came through boring and not at all my cup of tea. There were moments when I thought it would pick up and showed me great promise but nada: even the cutesy, giggle and swoon worthy moments of romance couldn’t save this story for me personally.

I feel horrible saying all this, but it’s true.
