So sad...this has to be the most boring book Carriger has written. I loved the Parasol Protectorate and was hoping this would be similar. It has almost no plot. It takes nearly half the book to just get "Rue" to India. Unfortunately even after she arrives there is no real adventure or mystery. I might check the next book in the series out of the library but don't plan on buying any others. I would rather re-read the Parasol Protectorate books.

I read the Parasol Protectorate series a few years ago and loved it, so I was excited to pick this up, but I was underwhelmed, to say the least. It was still bursting with Carriger's signature wit and cheeky charm, but the actual plot was incredibly boring; I didn't give one iota about what was going on. It's a shame because the characters were fun, and I liked them, but the whole story felt very tame and lackluster. I'm still on the fence about whether or not to continue, but if I do, they'll be something I pick up when nothing else looks good.

As always, I applaud Gail Carriger's storytelling ability. This is a solid installment in the on-going victorian supernatural steampunk universe she's created. I'll be reading the next one some time in the foreseeable future.

I read this one first before the Parasol Protectorate series and quiet enjoyed it. But having now read the previous series I feel like the story is lacking a little in comparison. It could just be that the Prudence seems younger than Alexia was in the first book. It comes across a little more YA, Prudence seems a little bratty? I'll be back to read the second book though I'd like to see how it all goes.
