Iron Flame The Empyrean #2

“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.” —Xaden Riorson Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves. Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits—and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules. But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year. Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College—and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.

Hated this ending and I think Yarros could use more time between books to flush things out.

Still had a fun time, still gonna preorder Onyx Storm of course

Genuinely, how does she keep coming up with reasons to return to Basgiath? Nothing could be less interesting to me than reading about how same-but-different 3rd year curriculum will be in the next book.

It felt like a lot happened, yet nothing much did. We were thrown a lot of historical info, introduced to a lot of new characters, yet the plot hardly moved.

Maybe it's just me, but I still don't get the venin and wyvern thing. How did Xaden turn venin? Just by channeling from the earth? So can anybody turn venin just by channeling from the earth?? And why are some venin not affected by the wards?

Violet was written in a very realistic, flawed, relatable way in this book compared to the first where she was just badass. I appreciate it, but felt like the book emphasised too much on it that it was longwinded and I grew really annoyed with her childish "full trust" attitude and assuming fault over everything.

The other woman troupe was extremely weak, childish and unnecessary. Cat was written in that stereotypical mean girl. We were alluded before by Bodhi/Garrick (I forget) that Xaden cared for her but he says he doesn't give a shit about her and essentially used her for sex. Cat suddenly flips when Violet saved her life. The whole thing was just a stupid soap opera that could've potentially ruined the whole book if it was dragged on any longer.

I didn't get Varrish's goals. He was such a weak villian for me. Was he just a psychopath who was into torturing people?

I wish there was more character development esp. in second squad's characters!

Overall, I think I had too high expectations for Iron Flame. It's not a bad book, but falls really short compared to Fourth Wing.

This rating is all because of the second half of this book. Everything in the first 40% of the book is so repetitive and honestly annoying with Violet constantly looping her thoughts about trust with Xaden, when she was basically doing the same with her friends. Not to mention her own insecurities also interrupting with their communication.

Andarna’s teen attitude mixed with Tairn’s tired dad energy really made this book fun with how crazy and serious things get. Also enjoyed seeing more of the gryphon riders backgrounds. Can’t wait to see where this goes next, and forget about how much this book annoyed me 😅😅

… xaden is A MAN but the book had a way more fantasy than the romance so I took one month to read it and there was days I didn’t even touched it cause it was so boring. Xaden and violet didn’t talked nothing at the bigining of the book and the description of the story was confused maybe it’s cause it’s in English and it’s not my native language but at the same time it’s not cause it was co fused I. My native langue also

Focus on your mission or the plan falls apart. Trust the others to do theirs.

I believe in teamwork and leadership when it comes to achieving challenging goals, and here we are getting similar wise comments from Tairn.

In the second book, our heroine finds herself on shaky ground where she needs to find herself, her centre. I’m glad she finally learnt to trust others—people who care about her. Then again, the constant trusting fight she had with you-know-who felt so childish; I felt like it was only to lengthen the pages in the book.

All in all, I’ve seen a good battle here. Well, the end wasn’t ideal, but life isn’t too.

I’m so frustrated by some of Yarros’ writing and her decisions. The miscommunication trope is the worst because it’s so easily misused and here is another classic case between Violet and Xaden. The question game??? The anachronistic language in a medieval fantasy is so lazy and the intensity of their relationship strains credulity because everything between them is always ~so hot, so perfect/electric/insert adjective here~. The ending of this book was actually very interesting and something I didn’t guess but felt right. I’m curious to see how the next book goes!

I’m not okay.

I am currently going to be staring at a wall for the next four days until onyx storm is released. I am not sure how to proceed from here.

This book was really good and I think it altered my brain chemistry. It took a lot of twists and turns that I didn’t see coming and now I am really scared for the next book.

DNF at 92%

Yeah so, no. This might be a soft DNF, I might pick it up if I see people liking the third one. Literally nothing happens in this book. Violet and Xaden fight about the same things, Violet STILL has no control over her powers (and people say she could win Aelin in a fight… bffr) and unfortunately I was spoiled the end, so I just kind of lost interest

  • - me. The good, the bad, the unforgivable. All of it. I am yours.“ His arm wraps around the small of my back, holding me steady and close. "You want to know something true? Something real? I love you. I'm in love with you. I have been since the night the snow fell in your hair and you kissed me for the first time. I’m grateful my life is tied to yours because it means I won’t have to face a day without you in it. My heart only beats as long as yours does, and when you die, I’ll meet Malek at your side. It’s a damned good thing that you love me, too, because you’re stuck with me in this life and every other that could possibly follow.“.
