Easily digesible ya read

** spoiler alert ** I’m going to start off by saying, I liked this book. A young heroine who starts off as a peasant only to discover accidentally that she has powers and gets elevated to a higher status. There’s action and betrayal, fighting of the classes. It is a textbook YA dystopian book which I love, obviously. There’s nothing wrong with saying that if you loved Hunger Games, Graceling or other YA dystopians, you’ll most likely about this story. But.. I was bored. Mare is cool but I couldn’t connect with her character. The relationships she formed with the Silvers felt so rushed and like there was no lead up to them at all. It was just like, boom, she loves Cal. Boom, she loves Maven. Boom, she befriended Jurian. It seems like most of the relationship building was done behind the scenes because she’d only had very few, casual encounters with Cal before suddenly they’re kissing? Then Maven, she barely mentions him being friendly to her before she’s supposedly into him. I didn’t mind that the focus was mainly on the mission but I feel like there need to be more buildup to those friendships/relationships. Maven being a traitor makes so much sense but is also equally frustrating. I started to guess at that towards the beginning so it didn’t shock me, but it does irritate me. I’m going to assume he doesn’t stay evil since there’s 3 more books, I’m assuming he comes around but… how is definitely the question. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ because it was a good story, I want to read more, but I just didn’t love it.

Fourth time reading it! Never gets old.

I may be basic, but I loved it. I love the tropes. It was well done. The writing was easy to read but also beautiful. And I am in love with the characters and how twisted and morally grey most of them are.

4.25 Well! That was twisty and fun! Looks like I have another series to obsess over. 😏 AND THE SHIPS! ALL THE SHIPS! 🚢 🚢 🚢 Review to come!
