A Ballad of Love and Glory

A Ballad of Love and Glory A Novel

Reyna Grande2022
A Long Petal of the Sea meets Cold Mountain in this sweeping historical saga following a Mexican army nurse and an Irish soldier who must fight, at first for their survival and then for their love, amidst the atrocity of the Mexican-American War—from the author of the “timely and riveting” (People) Across a Hundred Mountains and The Distance Between Us. The life of Ximena, a gifted Mexican healer, is tragically upended in the spring of 1846 when the United States Army marches south to the Río Grande, provoking an unjust war with México. After her husband is killed by Texas Rangers, Ximena leaves her beloved ranch to serve her country’s cause, traveling as an army nurse from battlefield to battlefield. Meanwhile, John Riley, an Irish immigrant in the US Army, has grown disillusioned by the brutal treatment of his fellow Irishmen at the hands of nativist officers. Risking death for desertion, he swims across the Río Grande to join the Mexican Army and lead the Saint Patrick’s Battalion, a company of American deserters determined to defend México against the northern invaders. As the war intensifies, Ximena and John are drawn inexorably to each other but face an uncertain future together. Reyna Grande’s spellbinding tale, peopled by bold unforgettable characters and inspired by actual events, explores the conflicting meanings of courage, love and loyalty, while illuminating an unsung moment in history that continues to impact the US-México border to this day.

Wow! I have no words. This was my first time reading this author’s work and reading a book like this, which I think it can fall under historical fiction, but it will not be my last. This story is set during the Mexican America War as Ximena’s gets word that her husband, who joined forces to help defend his homeland in Rio Grande, has been killed and she and her Nana has no other choice but to flee their home in search for shelter. Once Ximena learns she’s a healer like her grandma’s, she becomes a nurse to help injured soldiers in the Mexican Army. As the war went on, Ximena meet an American soldier who is discussed with how the American Army is treating their soliders so he decides to leave and join the Mexican Army. Once they meet their love story is one of love, heartbreak, passion, and service. This book will have you engaged from the start! From the beautiful depiction of the area and Mexican culture to how much rich history and research the author put into this project will leave you in awe and a little sad that this isn’t being taught in school. Ximena and Riley’s love story is told alongside a very ugly story of war and how much it takes from everyone in its wake and how lives will forever be changed by evil leaders and their greed.
