A good book!! Just enough mystery to keep you guessing until the very end!! Not my favorite Riley Sager novel but it was still pretty good!!

a hit or miss honestly

3.5 stars

this turned a bit too over-the-top in the second half for my taste, but still i loved the general ominous feeling the story had. that being said, i believe this book especially excels in building up the anticipation, it made it hard to put the book down. i also did enjoy the overarching theme explored of the rich and powerful using their status and privilege to take advantage of poor, desperate people. even so, i think it could have been handled with a bit more care and in a lot more detail.

The eerieness in this book was off the charts. It dragged a little at times but it always kept me on the edge of my seat. Riley Sager does it again with another incredible thriller!

This is the second book by Riley Sager that I've read (the first being Home Before Dark). I enjoyed it, although not as much as Home Before Dark, until the twist at the end. I think I was just expected something else, perhaps supernatural, and it caught me off guard. Still a good read and looking forward to the next book by Sager that I pick up!

This thriller had a lot of creepy twists and turns that will keep readers hooked until the end. Jules is an apartment sitter in one of New York City's most famous buildings. The money is awesome and there are so rules that seem a little strange but she figures the perks outweigh that. They don't.

Started listening to this one on a ride up to Buffalo with my fiancée. There’s nothing like a long drive and a new book.
I will preface another Sager review by saying that I absolutely loved Home Before Dark. It creeped me out while reading alone at night, and that’s all it took. He’s been an auto-buy BOTM choice for me since.
This book—aside from my selecting the wrong title and updating it multiple times—doesn’t really have that many locked doors. For someone so scared, she locks the apartment door…then sleeps on the couch when she could have presumably slept in the bedroom…and also locked that door. Maybe locked the bedroom door, then slept in the tub? Locking the bathroom door too?
Joking aside, this one felt pretty meh right up until the climax for me. It wasn’t that I wasn’t enjoying it, it just felt very basic for the majority of it. Sager has a way of shaking things up though, and I did find the ending to be both a good set of twists, and satisfying.
Personally a 4/5* for me. My third Sager read.

4.5 stars. I loved this one and Riley Sager is definitely an auto-buy author for me, 3 books 3 hits! I enjoyed the setting of this book even though it's quite different from what I generally prefer. I love detective stories in general but Riley Sager knows how to make regular people interesting. I didn't guess the twists and was afraid at one point that I didn't like the reveal, but of course there was another twist! And the overall plot was quite strong, even though it happened over the course of a few days it didn't feel rushed nor crammed. I enjoyed following the main characters and the different timelines were perfectly balanced to make it entertaining, deeper (with the main character's family background) and easy to follow.

Eh ben j’ai hâte de voir l’adaptions en série dites donc.

This book was entertaining and well-written, even if I did figure out most of the reveal pretty early on. Jules was a relatable and realistic main character. Many books of this type make the female protagonist too naive or trusting, but Jules wasn't like that. She had valid reasons for the choices she made while admitting that in other circumstances she might have made different choices. The secondary characters are sympathetic, at least until we know/suspect who not to trust. I'll definitely read more books by Riley Sager.

Loved the plot twist. Fun read.

** spoiler alert ** I liked this book for the most part, but had problems with a few things in it. I have absolutely no sympathy for a character who runs up massive amounts of student loan debt getting a worthless degree. If she had majored in something like accounting or biology instead of literature, she would have found another job. I could not take a character named Dr. Nick seriously. It reminded me of the "Hi, Dr. Nick" thing from "The Simpsons". I really disliked that the solution to the mysteries shifted from the "supernatural Satanic cult is sacrificing people to live forever" to the mundane and whiny "mean rich people are killing poor people to harvest their organs."

⭐️2 I found this thriller to be painfully average. As I read this book, I noticed similarities with Lucy Foley's The Paris Apartment. Both have a female main character who hopes to start a new life or make a fresh start. Both discuss wealth and survival in the hope of finding the whereabouts of a loved one in a mysterious, prestigious apartment replete with secrets and history. This point of view might make more sense if you read the book. I have read better thrillers this year alone. One of which is, despite my 3 star rating, The Paris Apartment. However, I found this one to be quite slow paced, especially in the first half, and all plot twists, especially Nick's involvement, seemed quite predictable and obvious. In no way, shape, or form was I shocked at any of the 'twists' or particularly excited about certain aspects of the story. Jules was quite unsubtle and sloppy about how she set about piecing together the history and mystery surrounding Bartholomew's and the sudden disappearance of previous apartment sitters, like Erica and Ingrid, which I found fairly frustrating. Whenever I read a thriller or mystery, I simply cannot stand overly nosy characters who are also incredibly tactless in how they act about things. They make the most questionable, idiotic decisions to uncover the truth. While this book wasn't totally unpleasant or awful to read, I felt like it was a whole lot of nothing to me. My expectations were low, but I am grateful for that. This is because the book lacked any excitement and suspense and left me with no investment in the characters, or pleasure in reading the book.

this was good, it was well wrapped up and it kept me entertained.

I actually enjoyed this quite a bit. However, I didn’t know if the author was a dude or not (Riley is a pretty gender-neutral name) but the moment I started the book, I knew instantly that it was a guy. There’s just something wrong with the way it was written… since it’s from a woman’s POV. But, the plot is pretty interesting.

This was a really fast paced story, with some unexpected twists and turns. At times I felt like I was walking through the rooms of the Bartholomew myself, scared of what I might find behind the next corner. Definitely a 5 star read!

predictable and underwhelming

every time i thought i had this figured out, i was wrong!

the ending of chapter 55 & 56 blew my mind,,,,,, i love women,,,,
