It’s a loooong book and honestly I would never guess who did it until I was around 90% down. It was so good at keeping people guessing.

To all the people who think this book is about transphobia, you’ve proven yourselves that you’re the kind of nasty tempered people who are always quick to accuse something that sometimes not even there! 

Get a grip. The murderer isn’t a trans, and there’s no trans character in the book.

As always I LOVE reading Robert Galbraith during December. It has become a tradition that I look forward to and appreciate.
Not much to say other than this was a REALLY good book even though it was very long it never got boring. It was MUCH better than Lethal White and I look forward to the next one.

Absolutely loved this book! I'm going to ignore the sabotage it suffered before being released because having read it there's nothing written in the book to support those accusations. This book is long, yes, but the subplots are really interesting and I thoroughtly enjoyed them given how most of them supported the characters' arcs. The twists were always great and the ending is so satisfactory both for the main plot of this book and for the fans of these two detectives. Also loved the amount of new information we got from Strike's past and present. I can't wait for the next book!

This was probably about 200 pages too long but I loved how bits and pieces of the case fell into place throughout the book, so satisfying and well done.

           I enjoy this series, even more so with the most recent books that are not as grotesque in their murder scene descriptions. I also enjoy the evolving business and personal relationship between Robin and Strike that progresses at a reasonable pace for a series (I’m looking at you, Martha Grimes, for one whose does not). 

While I was compulsively listening to this audiobook, someone I respect said she was not going to read it due to JKR’s transphobia, so I was attuned to the controversy. Instead, what I heard in the audiobook included some strongly anti-racist remarks made by the protagonists, and a lot of #metoo, pro-choice, and feminist perspectives. It bemoans how many women have been poorly treated by and suppressed by men, including “regular” men who don’t lock them in cages in dank basements. Is it any wonder, then, that some women have occasionally dressed like men to feel less vulnerable, or that some men have occasionally dressed like women to appear less threatening? Elsewhere JKR may have made transphobic remarks, but I did not hear any in this book specifically. 

At the heart of this book is the disappearance of a female doctor 40 years ago and her family’s desire for closure. Related to this topic of closure are other characters from the series (Matthew, Charlotte, Strike’s rock star father). A second story line about some men behaving badly in the workplace today further illuminates how far we are as a society from achieving parity.

at this point, i think, rowling needs to calm down.

i am attached to strike and robin characters, therefore, i try to follow the novels, the plot, their relationship. but during the last three or two books of this series i felt like the author went a bit too far. the whole world and story she builds around the main narrative (probably, one of the two main ones that the reader is interested in) is too sophisticated and too unnecessary at the same time.

the cases they accept to investigate are more and more impossible and complicated. hence, the excess of details. but at this point it just serves to effectively overwhelm the poor reader.

(p.s. i do not support the author by any means, borrowed this book from the local library).

This one was more about the character growth of Strike and Robin, which I appreciated. I just don’t know why it had to be so damn long.

I was hesitant because I felt the Lethal White case was a little too detailed and complex, but I stuck around for the Robin/Strike relationship. This one actually had an interesting case and sympathetic victim with lots of red herrings and twists. The character development and growth of Robin & Strike, even Pat and Max and other side characters, was just so satisfying. Couldn't put it down.
