A Novel

This was one of the better mysteries that I’ve read. It genuinely kept me guessing, and I didn’t know where the story was going to go next.

I’ve enjoyed following some of the bigger, celebrity-based book clubs. While it’s possible I would have read some of these books, the book clubs have helped place those books on a priority list. I’m now reading those books when the rest of the world is reading those books, and it’s been nice to be on the same page (haha, see what I did there) with so many other prolific readers. Good Morning America’s book club has included books that I have thoroughly enjoyed, pretty much every time. I’m not sure who curates their book picks, but they’re doing a fantastic job…ish. 
	This one was intensely disappointing. I realize that many times I sound like a broken record, but I need to emphasize, again, that I rarely know anything about the book before I start reading. That was true with this one. The title led me to believe I was going to dig into a deep, possibly heart-breaking romance. I started the book on a Saturday…my husband was at work so I had the day to myself…plenty of time to dive in and become invested in the story. I was bored within the fist twenty pages. I’ve also mentioned (repeatedly) that I’m not a big fan of a back-and-forth narrative, so I was immediately turned off by the format of this story. I really was never able to connect to the story because of that format…and what became more frustrating was that even when the story was from one person’s point-of-view, it was more about another person. I couldn’t get past that.
	It was also an extremely slow burn. There was an extreme amount of tension, but when the story fully developed, the reasoning was weak. There was nothing nefarious afoot, just emotionally based secrets and lies, selfish bullshit, and hurt feelings. While I love me some domestic drama, this tried to make itself into a domestic thriller, so after the entire story played itself out, I was supremely disappointed. I won’t dive deeper into the storyline, in an effort to not spoil the story. I’ll just be clear that this isn’t a story about love, nor is it a story that can even be called a thriller. There are elements of suspense, but the end reveals a different theme completely. I’m just disappointed, with the format, the way the story played out, and the outcome. I wanted a thriller, I got a snoozer.

Let’s talk about The Love of My Life. It’s a five star story about a man and woman deeply in love who are tested by secrets. Big ones. 

It sounds like other stories, but it’s not. It’s gut wrenching and beautifully written and will stay with me. I don’t want to give too much away. You should read this book.
