While not quite as refined as EM, I really liked this. Her style, with poetic vignettes evoke vivid imagery and scenes. It feels like it is more of a nonfiction than nonfiction sometimes, rarely conjuring direct quotes and continuity, instead focusing on those memories that are particularly ensconced, and conform to the theme of family and culture in Vietnam, though fictionalized, presumably informed by the author’s early life.

Kitap bir romandan ziyade 10 yaşında komünizmim yükselişi sırasında Vietnam’dan kaçıp Kanada’ya sığınan ve bu noktadan sonra hayatının hangi evrelerden geçtiğimi küçük -bazen yarım sayfa bazen ise 1,5 sayfalık notlar ile anlatmasından ibaret. Aslında çok güzel ve etkileyici ilerlerken sona yaklaştıkça konu çok daha kişisel hayata dönüyor. Vietnam’dan aile tarihine yöneliyor. O kısımlardan çok keyif almadım. Ama özellikle de Viet Thanh Nguyen’in Sempatizan kitabıyla eş zamanlı okurken, bir sempatizanın bakış açısına karşılık Amerikan yanlısı varlıklı bir ailenin ülkesini terk etmek zorunda kalmasını anlatımıyla kitabın ilk bölümleri çok daha anlamlı ve etkili bir hal aldı.
