Chaol took one step toward her, though. One step, then he said, “I love you.” She strangled the sob that built in her throat. “I’m sorry,” she said, hoping he would remember those words later—later, when he knew everything.

“When you do, I want you to remember that it wouldn’t have made any difference to me. It’s never made any difference to me when it came to you. I’d still pick you. I’ll always pick you.”

And then she did the most reckless thing she’d ever done in her life. She stood on her toes and whispered the words into his ear. The words that would make him understand, understand why it was so important to her, and what it meant when she said she would return. And he would hate her forever for it, once he understood.

And when that horrible truth had been revealed, she unfastened the Eye of Elena from her neck and folded it into his palm. “Never take it off. It will protect you from harm.”

“I’ll come back,” she said quietly. “I’ll come back for you.” And he knew that there was more that she wasn’t saying, some bigger meaning behind those words. But Dorian still believed her.

Dorian, however, was watching the captain with barely concealed surprise. Clearly, Westfall hadn’t thought Dorian would support his decision. If only Westfall had been his heir instead; his warrior’s mind was sharp, and he didn’t balk from doing what needed to be done. The prince had yet to learn that kind of ruthlessness.

Whatever shred of hope he’d had for a future with her was gone. She still felt something for him, she’d admitted, but she would never trust him. She would always hate him for what he’d done.

Finished upon landing in Melbourne, Australia! Itching to start book number 3!! I believe this series will just keep on getting better and better!!

i already read the series 5 years ago and i’m so glad i didn’t remember anything (except the major plot twists obviously), because it felt like reading it for the first time again. 

the story is so simple, yet so captivating and the magic system is so well thought out.

Loved this book! The mix of semi-politics and magic have me fully hooked, can’t wait to start the next one. I found that I sort of connected Celaena to the missing princess fairly early so the last page shock wasn’t very shocking but her being fae definitely caught me off guard!

Due to some not-so-great life events, I stopped reading when I was about a quarter of the way finished with this book. However, I am really glad I finished it. However, because it ended up being around 6 months between my reads, there are some aspects of the plot that I need a refresher in.

I enjoyed how the story progressed, and was heartbroken about Nehemia. Her relationship with Celena was special, and I loved reading about a strong female bond in an SJM book. I also appreciate how Celena is developing, and I appreciate that we get to see her grieve in this book. I can’t wait to know more about her as Aelin.

I also enjoyed learning about her fae heritage. I guess I wish that it was brought up in the story sooner, however I guess I understand why it wasn’t. I’m very excited to read Heir of Fire. Hopefully I will be able to read more often this time.

I just finished the book, and o. My. God. The ending had me stunned. 

While the first half of the book wasn't as action filled as I anticipated, it was still very good, well-written, and was a beautiful base for all the important plot points later on in the book.

2/3 of this book was a bit of a slog to get through. Not a lot happened until BAM, everything was happening. Overall I liked it, but it felt a bit filler-ish combined with being a set-up for the rest of the series. The reveal was fun, though.
