The Lost Apothecary
Reviews

A tale of the lives of three women intertwined across centuries. We first follow Caroline, a historian turned towards pursuing stability. Her journey of self-discovery begins with the apothecary. Nella, is a healer for women, in more ways that just curing illness. Lastly, Eliza, the innocence of adolescence mixed with curiosity propels us into a life-altering decision for all. I couldn’t put this book down as the mysteries unveiled themselves through each character’s point of view.

This book was not at all what I expected in the best way possible. I fear my review won’t do it any justice.
Caroline ends up taking her 10 year anniversary alone after discovering her husband’s infidelities. She ends up mudlarking with some natives in London and finds an old apothecary vial that inspires her to dig deep into its history.
The Lost Apothecary was ran by Nella. Her mother once used it to heal people but Nella, having her heart torn in two after discovering her lover Frederick was married and had poisoned her forcing a miscarriage, turned the apothecary into a poison shop. This shop, Nella swore, would only help women in need of salvation from men who lie and cheat, abuse and rape. Her poisons would never be made to cause harm to women.
I can’t say I approve of her ways of trying to help victimized women but I enjoyed reading about it. I feel like we often don’t get stories where women help women so I’m here for it.
Nella meets little Eliza, aged 12 when her mistress sends her to the apothecary to retrieve some poisoned eggs. Turns out Mr. Amwell had some very dark plans for Eliza and Mrs. Amwell would not let what happened to their previous help, happen to Eliza.
Nella and Eliza end up developing a strong bond similar to that of mother and daughter. The two of them get in to some hot water and they both do what they can to right what had been wronged.
Caroline unravels all the lost apothecary mysteries and rediscovers herself. Feeling confident to pursue her own dreams and file for divorce.
A tiny vial with a huge story! Must read.

Why did we go to such lengths to protect the fragile minds of children? We only robbed them of the truth—and the chance to grow numb to it before it arrived with a hard knock on the door.
