This series is two for two, as far as I'm concerned. Much like Savage Legion, the sequel manages to be both an excellent example of military/epic fantasy as well as a rebuke and a challenge to the genre. Wallace is extremely well versed in the genre, and plays with readers' expectation in ways that surprise, delight, and occasionally shatter.
