Scoff the LoT

We do like our food, but if we 'scoff the lot' (to quote from a telling piece of northern dialect) we're not leaving a single morsel and we're eating greedily. We hear so much about food these days, it screams at us from one tv moment to the next. We're in danger of becoming a consumer society before anything else. I shouldn't grumble, I suppose, if I find this useful for Part Nine of this series on English Idiom, with just one more to go for the present. Food apart, I think of all the things that we measure, mostly sub-consciously and evaluate. Nearer the front of my mind there is the wealth of idiom that this all creates and, as always, gives us the chance not only to laugh at ourselves but to pick up good advice, identify our shortcomings. Please join me; share too the thought that life is ninety per cent decision -making, that we need to feel every step we take and that we do this most times with ease What actually controls this process is another matter. The human mind can be as irregular as it likes. One can wind it up, but it isn't a watch!
