This is the first book I've read this year that I've rated one star, and for good reason. After reading Eligible, another book in this series of modern Austen retellings, I didn't think this could be any worse. Oh, how wrong I was. (view spoiler)[One of my main problems with this book is that it's supposed to be set in modern times but for some reason, people were still inheriting houses and had the classism of the 19th-century characters they are based on. At least the author of "Eligible" managed to modernise the characters better than this author did. At points, I imagined the characters in regency gear because I couldn't fathom how this was supposed to be set in modern times apart from the use of emails and riding cars instead of horses. Another problem I had it was too fast-paced, it's almost like the author couldn't wait to get to the end of the book. Relationships run slower in this century, so I expected that to happen in the book too but no. Also, I saw no chemistry between the characters, and wasn't at all invested, especially since I already know the story but I've read Wattpad retellings that were 100 times better than this. (hide spoiler)] I'll probably still read the other two books in the series, partly just because I want to but also in the hope that they will improve on the books I've read so far. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I certainly didn't think either book would be this bad.
