I love that this book has such an intelligent, kind, and admirable female role model. 

On the other hand, I had already watched the movie before reading this book, and honestly I’m a little disappointed. I don’t say this often, but I enjoyed the movie more. The novel was slow at first and left some loose threads unresolved.

The Case of the Missing Marquess by Nancy Springer is the first in the Enola Holmes mystery series. Written for middle graders, it introduces a much younger sister of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes, someone who is as smart and capable as they are but because of her youth and her gender has to struggle to live her life the way she wishes.

In this first volume Enola is in a quandary. Her father is long since dead and now her mother has run off with the family funds, leaving her with the staff and an empty house. Being a young single woman not of age, Enola will be forced do as her brothers wish.

In the middle of trying to find her mother through clues left behind meant only for her, Enola stumbles across another mystery. A young marquess has gone missing and Enola feels she understands the clues better than her brothers.

While Enola's methods are Sherlockian, her insights and observations give Springer a chance to discuss gender issues in the Victorian as well as making allusions to present day gender issues. In many of the Victorian era novels I've read, London and more broadly, Great Britain is painted with rosy nostalgia or is presented with more grime and misfortune than the average Dickens novel. The Enola books avoid either extreme while still making London a potentially dangerous but rewarding place for Enola to live.

But in fairness I did watch it first before reading the book so that creates it's own bias.

It's so different from the film (I watched it first before reading the book.), but I really liked it. I couldn't stand Sherlock and Mycroft, so Enola's my favourite character. The book was quite exciting and very fun to read, since it's also a shorter book.

The book is about finding the missing Marques and the detective here is Enola Holmes, the sister of Sherlock Holmes (the great detective). Here, in the story, the mother of Enola Holmes goes missing on the day of her birthday. All she has left for Enola is a birthday present and nothing else. Enola is very worried about her mother and decides to find her. Now, though the question may seem to be whether Enola finds her mother or not?, the real deal lies in, whether Enola is able to find the missing Marques as well. Because that will ultimately prove how great a detective she is!!! 

I love how the story unfolds. It is a good read for all bibliophile (especially beginners who have a taste for thriller and mystery books.)

2 stars because 1 would be unfair - it’s competently written. But dear god did I hate every second of this book, and not just because Enola (did you know it’s alone backwards? Don’t worry, you’ll never be able to forget) is annoying af. I swear the author has some personal beef with Sherlock and can’t decide if her protagonist is going to loathe or adore him and, I get it. Life’s complicated. But not always within two paragraphs and for stupid reasons.

This one is hard to rate. When the movie came out, I had no idea it was an adaptation of a book. And I had never heard of the author, nor read anything by her.
I watched the movie (I strongly prefer watching the movie first and then read the book, because a) I have an idea of how characters and setting are because I am so not creative and need help in that; b) I always prefer the book so I watch the movie and enjoy, and then read the book and enjoy it even more. The alternative would be enjoying the book and be disappointed in the movie, and to that I prefer a double enjoyment) - I was saying, I watched the movie and loved it. The charm, the fun, the mystery, the action, Henry Cavill being so absurdly hot, Millie Bobby Brown being phenomenal.

The book...just wasn't the same. I can accept the change in plot because of course movies need different things than books, but here I felt that so much was missing. I preferred the mother-daughter relationship of the film, it made more sense and was so cute compared to the book, where the mother was not that great. Especially when we find out where she is, like ugh. Nope.

Enola is also way too young in the book, and lacks much of the wit and intelligence I loved in the film. The marquess is almost non-existent and the book is quite short too.

I mean, it wasn't bad and I still enjoyed it, but they did such a splendid job with the movie that I couldn't help wishing the book was different and just more.

I more so read this book because eleven will be leading this movie series in a few years. I thought it was a fun and quick read. I loved my various plot lines included in this book and also the family dymancics of Enola holmes. It was such a fast read and it kept my attention. I loved the narrator a lot and will def be checking out the other books in the series. I did enjoy how even though every book may have individual case there is also a long term series long case that might become super compelling. I will def. be checking out the movie as well

I enjoyed this book. Once I got into it I enjoyed it a lot more. The more formal writing style can be a bit jarring at first, but you warm up to it! I didn't love the way the Holmes talked to Enola at all. While I understand this is the way the times were, I don't think it sends a good message to pre-teen or teenage girls that could be reading this book. Never should a girl think she is less for being different in any way. I also didn't fully like the way the two mysteries were set up. Her mother is kind of awful to her, but instantly Enola must find her? I know kids worship their parents but even Enola admits this and it seemed odd not to address it. This book is also The Missing Marquess, yet that took up a 1/3 of the book at best. I think it could have been structured or paced better. Overall, I did enjoy the ride and plan to read the next in the series.
