I'm so disappointed. I read Kathryn's short story Astaroth in the new anthology that just came out, and I fell in love with her writing and wanted more. So I looked at her backlist, and this series seemed the most closely related to the short story. This book was so depressing, and not sexy at all. It also lacked the same level of humor that the short story had. It was a completely different vibe.

Now, objectively without comparing it to the short story this book has decent plot, it is intriguing, and there are several funny moments. However, for a paranormal romance the romance was severely lacking. We don't even get confirmation of a romance until chapter 21, and then it like immediately jumps into bang town in a flashback OF THE FIRST TIME THEY MET. Not to mention the weird insta-love thing that chapter had going on, plus some weird pain kink that I'm just not into. There was no build-up either. It made it so that I had no connection to these characters getting together. There was no pay-off.

Also, the story was depressing. You have your dark theme of a cult murdering people, but then you don't balance it with enough levity in the main character. Veil is essentially alone even when she has those she considers friends around her because they will die eventually and she won't. Not to mention the grief and guilt she feels due to past actions. It's very dark, and I just didn't love it the way I wanted to.
