China and Taiwan Cross-Strait Relations Under Chen Shui-bian

Chen Shui-bian's 18th March 2000 election victory in Taiwan was the first defeat for the Kuomintang (KMT) government after 55 years in power. The rise to power by the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has changed and complicated political and strategic relations across the Taiwan Strait with China.
