this was my intro to middle grade and i absolutely loved it :) it was predictable but that didn’t take away any of my enjoyment. the ambiance and writing was wonderful and the antagonist really did creep me out lol. i’d love to read it physically rather than as an audiobook like i did though. 3.75

I picked this one up because it was on display in the bookstore and the cover art caught my eye. I flipped through it and loved the illustrations. Having now read it, I found the characters flat and the plot meandering and predictable. I probably won’t revisit the story, but it is a beautiful book.

I have been a fan of everything Emily Winfield Martin does for some time now and Snow & Rose was no exception! It’s one of those books that I wish I’d had as a kid. I would have cherished the whimsical illustrations, her beautiful descriptions, and also the adorable vintage vibe that the physical book itself has. But I can cherish them now as an adult too. This book is delightfully spooky at times, and had some interesting twists. All the characters and their distinct personalities drag you in and make you genuinely care for them. It was the perfect adaptation of an old fairy tale. I love it.

I bought this book over a year ago, a cover buy. I expected to enjoy the illustrations but I did not expect to be equally blown away by the writing. The author-illustrator uses exactly enough words and not a single one more. And she uses them brilliantly. I was so impressed by how rich and real her characters were in such a small book. Her art has the same simple beauty. I loved every page.

What a charming, darling little book this was! I adore fairytale retellings in general and was particularly smitten by this one because unlike a lot of new re-imaginations, this book retained the original fairytale's magic and atmosphere. 

Here, we have a cottage in the woods, an enchanted forest, a couple of sisters who couldn't be more unlike each other, a whimsical library, things hidden in plain sight, trees that talk, woodland creatures galore, magical flora, known and unknown dangers and people living underground! 

The writing was beautiful and was of the kind that I would have enjoyed as much in my childhood as I did now. The storytelling was nuanced and the setting created the foreboding atmosphere that is imperative to such stories. If I have to nitpick, I'd say that apart from the protagonists, Snow & Rose, all the other characters had much more potential than was explored. This could have been all the more enjoyable if the secondary characters were more layered but then, perhaps, the story would have lost its childlike appeal? However, the antagonist could have definitely been more developed. He never felt like a real threat. The climax needed more meat. I would have definitely taken a star off my review for that but the vintage-y illustrations bowled me over.

I am glad I got a hardback of this book. The cover is just gorgeous too!

I am so enchanted! This is a charming retelling of a fairytale. Filled with beautiful illustrations, atmospheric and so cozy to look at, this book is a real treasure I will keep for my children.
It was such a whimsical tale about two little sisters, the woods, the magic and of course, a big fluffy bear! A book I needed to read, as it has all aspects I love deeply.
This book would be perfect to read during an autumn afternoon with a cup of hot tea, as it feels like a warm hug. It´s so lovely, and I can assure you will relax so nicely while reading. The pages are beautifully decorated, so it´s a feast for the eyes, along with the enchanting illustrations. Surprise, there are even beautifull sketches at the end of the book, mushrooms, animals, little girls! So so sweet.
I read it on a rainy summer afternoon and it was a great idea to do so, it brought so much magic to my day. If you want enchanting and lovely children book to read, full of magical encounters, mushrooms, deep woods, friendship and sisterhood, it´s the right book for you, too.

You have no idea how sad I am to have disliked this book.
Snow&Rose was one of my most anticipated read of 2018 and I definitely thought this book will be an instant 5 star read for me. Unless...It wasn't.
This book is a retelling of two fairytales I read as a child. Because I knew the fairytale, I knew everything that was happening in the book before it actually happened. Because this book hardly innovates with anything. What started as an amazingly written fairytale, simply fell flat in the end.
I think what saddened me the most was that it hardly had any you know, life lessons? If there is a thing about children books is how they actually try to teach young kids something. What was the lesson here? Be nice with bears? I mean...
I can hardly call this a retelling, more likely an extended tale of a lesser known fairytale.

Now, what's wrong with me being so negative? There were some things I actually loved in this book ! My favorite thing was by far the Library theme it explored. The idea of a Library filled with objects instead of books that each tell an amazing tale- this truly appealed to me. I found it amazingly original. Too bad it was so little explored. I also truly loved Ivo as a character, such a fascinating and myserious figure that just got lost along the way. In the beginning, this book was simply superb. Unfortuantely, it didn't stay like this.
