SOAS A Celebration in Many Voices
This is a book about SOAS: its extraordinary history, its vibrant present and its opinion-shaping future. The contributions from the SOAS community are as varied and colourful as SOAS itself. Some are serious, some are humorous, all are filled with a love of this institution which, for many, has been a home from home. What the contributions share is that fundamental ethos of SOAS which was evident from the very start, back in 1917, and which many call the 'soul' of SOAS: an ethos of tolerance of other cultures and religions, based on a proper knowledge and understanding. SOAS is justly proud of its long history of scholarship and expertise in Oriental and African studies. Proud, too, of its remarkable archive of rare manuscripts, books, maps, letters, diaries, artefacts and paintings, which is one of the hidden treasures of London, and which furnishes this book with its beautiful illustrations.
