Reviews

Welcome to another edition of a book that has been sat on my shelfs for years and I should have watched ages ago but was too daunted to pick up but on a week where all I wanted to do was escape the real world, It was amazing to escape of the world of Caraval! This Review is properly not needed at all as I expect most will have already experienced this one before me but in case you have not here goes.
Describing this one is rather hard but the atmosphere, the characters, the game, the magic… the writing was so poetic that I found myself obsessing over the words that Stephanie has written it was like the words were jumping off the page and I was dead centre in the world created smelling everything and experiencing it all with Scarlet & her Sister Tella.
"Welcome, welcome to Caraval! The grandest show on land or by sea. Inside you’ll experience more wonders than most people see in a lifetime. You can sip magic from a cup and buy dreams in a bottle. But before you fully enter into our world, you must remember it’s all a game."
I don't want to give anything away or ruin the surprise for others. There were many twists and turns that I didn't see coming while listening to this story. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, something else would happen that made me question everything again. This story held my attention and kept me guessing right to the very end.

I felt something was missing, the book was good but not amazing, maybe because I was comparing the world building to Harry Potter a little bit, even though they're very different. But I felt of caraval wasn't that magnificent to me.
Planning to read the next book though.
I definitely liked Julian, and the writing.
"She imagined loving him would feel like falling in love with darkness, frightening and consuming yet utterly beautiful when the stars came out"

The ending really caught me off guard, and some of the moments had me going back to reread parts! There was just once or twice I got a little bored, but other than that it picked back up quick. Love Scarlett!

3.5!
didn’t surprise me the way i expected it to. i love julian & scarlett + scarlett & tella’s sisterhood tho <3
ALSO WHY DIDNT HE CALL HER CRIMSON AT THE END. WHY.

many people said this book was overhyped, and i finally read it in 2024. for me it was a very fun easy 5 stars read! i managed to read it blindly even i already saw some reviews of this so for me theres no dull chapters at all, it was really fun & made me more and more intrigued by each chapter. a simple fantasy book, easy to understand yet still surprising. i actually feel like i can guess where the plot is gonna bring me but the book succeeds to keep me at the edge of my seat worrying about how the next chapter is going to be. very appropriately hyped book 👏🏼

I really enjoyed this book and had trouble putting it down. My favorite part was the romance and plot twists— I would definitely recommend!

world building so good bro !! also the descriptions always eat 🙂↕️☝️ got confused midway kasi ang daming nangyayari pero am so excited for legendary ack

Wow. Just wow, this book is like something I've never read before in fantasy. It had me questioning everything and I almost went as crazy as the characters in the game trying to figure it out. Loved it every second of it, can't wait to read the next ones.

Dreamy and whimsical
I read this after OUABH so I’m looking forward to seeing certain cameos. Very intrigued with where this series is going

this was a cute, cozy, fairytale ! it was fun but also felt a little young. it would be good for starting fantasy

I wanted to love this book so badly. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t bad but i just couldn’t quite grasp themagic. I had a gard time picturing everything as i was reading. Will definitely continue the series though.

I really liked it. It was very magical and fast paced. I read it in a couple of hours!

You know when you find a book that just sweeps you into the pages and fills you with magic. This book did just that it pulled me in front the start and has me hooked to continue the series.
Brilliantly written with great characters

stephanie garber is truly an amazing writer,, this book was so magical and hard to put down,, e ery chapter was a new surprise

Omgggg so good 😩 there was constantly something happening never a boring moment. Tella had me so mad😵💫 my girl Scarlett needs some therapy

slight spoilers ahead and also very incoherent ranting so read at ur own risk it’s interesting how the outcome of this book and what was at stake here for scarlett hinged entirely on how stupid, dumb, and thoughtless she could be and boy did scarlett DELIVERRRR. and I kept pushing through telling myself “she’s growing, she’s learning” and I was truly rooting for her all the way to the last page, but I feel like we ended the book with scarlett still just as useless as she was at the start. like looking back on it I don’t think we would have gotten such a happy ending if scarlett had even an ounce of cleverness to her, but ig that isn’t supposed to be the point—she proved that she really loves her sister, and isn’t that what it’s all about at the end of the day? this book at its core was really just an ode to older sisters everywhere. I have an older sister and ik she would be just as motivated if she was in scarlett’s shoes. but yk, i also couldn’t blame my sister if after all this she threw me off a fucking balcony herself. who is paying for scarlett’s therapy??? I may have disliked her throughout this book along with every single decision, action, thought she made in all 400 pages, but imo someone should have given scarlett a glock and let her mow down every mf involved in this. tella—dumb as rocks, but i guess we’re not supposed to think that anymore?? julian—inconsistent (which I get he’s supposed to be but still), boring, underdeveloped, borderline useless. daddy dragna—just give her an ar-15 for this guy. just INSANELY evil for no reason??? like we’re not even gonna try and flesh that out a little more??? and just the ending being revised like five thousand times in the last 100 pages, I think EYE need therapy reading this book after all the gaslighting i just went through. like even after the “actual” ending im scared there’s gonna be some other curveball in legendary where scarlett will still not know peace. and yes i’m gonna read legendary. bc at the end of the day, it was the author’s debut and im reading it for the first time 7 years after and it seems like from fans that the books and spin off just keep getting better. but the world building could have been sm more fleshed out (did ms garber like forget about valentina), the characters more developed and interesting and go through a journey with actual growth, less purple prose (scarlett is giving tri-bi queen halsey a run for her money with how much she experiences EVERY. SINGLE. THING. as colors), and the romance actually engaging (which I had read that ms garber didn’t originally intend for it to be a romance book and I wish she didn’t flirt with the idea at all bc it was so superficial and bland). also the lack of women in this was so disappointing. my favorite character actually ended up being aiko bc she was just like the only normal female character we encountered that just called scarlett out on her bs (and she coulda done more!) and I wish we had more of that energy throughout the book. it was so male heavy :((( OH and, looking up fanart after this and seeing julian depicted as some pasty timothee chalamet ass white boy when ms garber stated the whole time that he was a BROWN man…jail, everyone. anyway if I ever met scarlett and any of these other characters irl it’s on fucking sight. give ME the glock

So twisty and turny, I was guessing at where we were going almost the whole time. I really feel like I fell down the rabbithole on this one. The imagery of the way Scarlett views emotions as colours was fantastic. A really great read!

(4.5) Even though it did not get 5 stars, it still became one of my favourite books. It did not make me say "wow" like the other books on my favourites shelf but still gave me a delightful adventure as I read it. I loved the romance but I felt as it was a bit rushed. Some parts of the book was confusing as well but it was still a good book nonetheless.

Fuck this shit. I don't like this book. I'm not going to force myself to read it. It isn't like I was planning to read the whole series if I finished this one. Dnf-ing it is.

I have no idea what to say. I never thought I would have enjoyed this book as much as I did. I can't wait to get my hands on the second book.

This book was actually so amazing I could not stop reading. Just overall this book was perfect.
