Tella pictured the word 'good' withering next to Dante. 'Good' was the word people used to describe how they slept at night and bread fresh out of the fire. But Dante was more like the fire. No one called a fire good. Fires were hot, burning things children were warned not to play with.

But tonight I kissed you because I wanted you. I haven't stopped wanting you since the night of the Fated Ball when you were willing to risk your life because you wanted to make me angry. After that, I couldn't stay away."

"I kept coming back to you, not because of Legend, or the game. But because you're so real and alive and fearless and daring and beautiful and if what's between us isn't real, then I don't know what is."

"Yes." Dante took another step. "To everything."

His head dipped a little. "After all that just happened, I would think that was already obvious."

Tella claimed she didn't want love - she liked to say love trapped snd controlled and ripped hearts apart. But the truth was she also knew love healed and held people together, and deep down, she wanted it more than anything.

In that moment, inside of that kiss, she wanted to know everything about him. She wanted him, and it no longer scared her.

"Would you like my help?" Dante dropped his hand to her hips.

Tella's breathing hitched. "No. I don't want your help... I want you."

"So," she said cautiously, is all this your way of telling me you're the villain?"

His chuckle was dark. "I'm definitely not the hero."

"I already knew that," Tella said. "It's my story, so clearly I'm the hero."

"You're the most beautiful liar I've ever seen."

"I shouldn't have kissed him," she mumbled. "I don't even know why I kissed him. I didn't really care if he kicked me out of the palace for lying. I think I wanted to make you jealous."

"I've never wanted to be someone else until that moment i saw him kiss you on the dance floor."

"You should have asked me to dance first."

"I will, next time." His lips swept a kiss across her forehead. "Don't give up on my, Donatella. If you stay with me long enough to get you somewhere safe and warm, then i promise i won't let go of you like i did that night. Together we'll fix all of this."

"Maybe I want to sleep here," Tella mumbled. "I'd wager it's safer than in your arms."

"What's so dangerous about my arms?" he murmured.

"If Legend wants something, he'll go beyond the ends of this earth for it."

"I thought you were working for Le-gend."

He eased closer. "Think whatever you want, but if you honestly believe that's the only reason I'm here right now with my hands all over you, you're not nearly as clever as I thought."

"If you're here to learn about Legend," he said, "I can tell you more than anyone inside there."

"Would you tell me who he is?" Tella asked

"If I was Legend I'd definitely never tell you"

"No," he answered slowly, gently tugging her even closer. "I'd hold on to my secret because I'd want to keep playing the game with you, and if I told you the truth it would spoil all the fun." His eyes stayed locked with hers, as if there was something unspoken he was trying to say.

Jacks, the actual love of my life 🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶 Tella, who's a foolish girlie with no personality does not deserve to be his one true love, I DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I already had no expectations with anything from this book and Stephanie because of her flowery writing that makes no sense + the wishy-washy way the magic and the world of Caraval works after book #1 but then she went ahead and made Legend's reveal just plain boring. Utterly lackluster, as it was the only thing I was looking forward to (mildly said) and I was imagining someone more mysterious and charming, scary and ancient at the same time, not.. whatever we got

Also, I started and finished this solely for Jacks's sake so I will, begrudgingly, put myself through Finale for his sake, too 💔

My thoughts during the book.


  
    "The name at the bottom of this one was The Prince of Hearts. It showed a young man with a face made of angles, and lips as sharp as two knife blades. One hand near his pointed chin clasped the hilt of a dagger, and red tears fell from his eyes, matching the blood staining the corner of his narrow mouth."
  


Jacks is even hot on the card.


  
    "Even his rumpled velvet tailcoat appeared bored as he lounged against the plush leather seats. Intentionally looking away from Tella, he bit into an intensely white apple. “You can’t ride in here.”

I read the Once Upon a Broken Heart series first before reading the Caraval series, and it didn't occur to me that the two were linked until I started the second book of this series when I read Tella's full name. I was like 'Donatella? That name sounds familiar- wait. NO WAYYYYYYYY.' Literally connecting the dots on the first page. OF THE SECOND BOOK, NOT EVEN THE FIRST ONE. Using my critical thinking skills at its finest. I need more male leads with tattoos.

This was a very quick, enjoyable read for me, but I wasn't really swept away in the story. I look forward to finishing the series though :).

Um, this book was SO GOOD!??
I'm honestly a little surprised. I wasn't blown away by Caraval by any means but I decided to give the series a second try and this book has me completely sold! This book was AMAZING. It had all the elements I found to be missing in the first novel. It had more plot, it had a bit more world-building, and it had even MORE romance. There were still a couple things I didn't like: there was a very big plot device used in this novel that was super important but wasn't mentioned AT ALL in the first novel and there could be some meandering from the main character. Overall, those were really my only two problems and I can't seem to dock any stars off my rating because I just purely enjoyed this book. It was s0 fun! I was dreaming about the love interest and thinking about really absurd, stunning dresses. I'm so excited to finish the series and I'm so glad I decided to continue on with this story!

This book was a rollercoaster of emotions. I loved the tension between Tella and Dante and all of their interactions in general. Jacks was a great character overall, who I still find very hard to judge, but i still really like him. I hope to see more of him in book 3. The plot twist at the end was definitely something, I mean I somehow saw it coming but it still managed to surprise me. Not to mention how tragic it was to me after everything. I would've liked to see more of Scarlett in this book, but overall a solid 4 stars.

This series currently has me in a chokehold. It is so incredibly engaging and I truly never want to put it down. Getting to follow Tella’s story was incredible, especially riding the emotional rollercoaster she was on.

For the record 3.75 stars means this book was VERY GOOD. It looks like it isnt but it is. Anyways, amazing. I loved it; such a well written plot line and I love the idea of the second caraval in Valenda. All I want to say is: JACKS The star of this novel. Well not the star, that's Donatella, Scarlette's sister, but he's the real one we all read this book for. Oh, don't forget Dante. Um no offence but WOW. I love him so much 😭 I CAN'T BELIEVE HE'S LEGEND AND I ALSO CANNOT BELIEVE HE WALKED AWAY FROM DONATELLA AFTER SHE WON 😪 Also Paloma or "Paradise the lost" deserved to stay in the cards. God. What a useless woman. Tella fighted for her life when Paloma didn't even care for her. Loser. I hope she stays in a coma state bc wtf. I did love this book, but I found myself not actually fully caring to be honest. I didn't care. I didn't really want to pick it up, but when I was reading it, it was enjoyable. I feel like it was dragged out a bit, and that there wasn't alot of action. And as much as I love tella, she's kind of getting a bit boring, and I'm not her number one fan. I missed being in Scarlette's brain. I did like everything reaching full circle; Scarlett looking for the Count D'Arcy. LoveLoveLove that concept, that'll most likely flow through to the next book.Definatly excited to end this series; especially with that ending of Dante being on the throne. Now, all this series needs to make it 100% better is I need to be going through more emotions. I feel like i'm just always feeling the same; a quick pang of giggles and maybe confusion and then that's about it. I want to feel scared and worried and terrified and I want to cry. So in the next book, I'm expecting a death or something.

Absolutely amazing! Very intriguing, mysterious and fantastical. Normally I don't read the next part of a book but I do not regret reading part 2 of caraval. It's just as captivating as part 1 was.

I am glad I was forced into reading this sequel, because the author really stepped it up with this one. I was not a fan of book 1 and never thought I would read this one but I’m glad I gave the series a second chance.
