'Market Garden' was one of the most audacious, and controversial, operations of the Second World War. If Montgomery's plan had succeeded, the war could have been ended in 1944. But the attack failed disastrously and British paratroopers were cut off for nine days, suffering huge losses before eventually being evacuated across the Rhine.
