As beginnings go, this is an unusual one. I'm used to stronger first volumes, that focus on setting up the world and the characters. However, from a world building perspective, I found The Gunslinger a bit lacking and it's also not doing a great job building up the character. Given how short this book is and also the fact that King started writing it when he was very young, I am willing to let all that go. It is, afterwards, a 7-book series, so there's more than enough time to develop both the world and the character of Roland.

The good thing is that, despite me not being a fan of the Western genre, I became intrigued very fast by Roland's history and fate as well as by the world where the events are taking place. It's because everything is intertwined with fantasy, so I don't get the feeling that I'm in a John Wayne movie. 

Maybe it's also precisely because King didn't explain everything from this first volume that I am quite tickled to move on. Things are barely touched, but still enough to rise my curiosity to keep going (which I will, at some point, after I've gone through my current TBR). I do think, though, that Roland is already a complex character and can't wait to see how he evolves.
