Meditations of Marcus Aurelius In Modern English

T. May2011
The writings of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, Imperator, Emperor of Rome in the second century AD, philosopher, warrior, Stoic. These were written in the last decade of his life while engaged in constant wars with the tribes of the northern provinces. The Meditations are not a structured statement of his philosophy but rather almost a stream of consciousness, written as he found time between battles, between campaigns. Most translations, if not all, use the early Modern English thee, thou, thine, and wast, hath, hast, which makes it difficult for modern readers to appreciate the text. Since Koine Greek, the language which Aurelius used to write the text, did not use the familiar form of second person pronouns, it seems unnecessary to use those forms in translation.
