The Anatomist's Apprentice

A great “Who Done it mystery!” I love the twist of the plot. Just when you think you have it figured out, you are hit with another one. In the end, you don’t see it coming. As a Science teacher, I love the medical aspects of this book as well as the intrigue. Listened to the audible and I’m looking forward to the rest it the series.

Oh Boy!! A new favourite mystery writer to add to my collection!! And the sad thing is that this book has been waiting on my shelves for years, shoved to the back of the pile and forgotten. That'll teach me!! Great historical detail (graphic medical/autopsy/injury descriptions ... be cautious if that sort of thing bothers you) colourful characters ... most enjoyable.

Written by Tessa Harris, this follows Dr. Thomas Silkstone in the late 1700s - before the American Revolution. Dr. Thomas is called by Lady Lydia to look into her brother's sudden death that might not be from natural causes. Dr. Silkstone is a wonderfully, deep character who looks at life realistically. Except where the Lady is concerned. The writing was good, the mystery interesting, though the story overall was rather slow. The issue I had with this novel? The relationship between Lydia and Dr. Silkstone. Which, upon looking into it, looks like is the romance for the rest of this book series. If you enjoy historical mysteries, this is a good novel. If you enjoy a good mystery, again, this is a really good novel that takes a look at how to attempt to find out what murdered someone when the body has begun decomposing during a time when the doctors were at the beginning of discovery when it came to identifying what killed people and how. And, if you like your novels to have some romance, you again will likely enjoy this novel. I just didn't like it because Lady Lydia brought the doctor there to, supposedly, prove her husband was innocent. Yet, she starts up something with the good doctor. I just think that the doctor could do far better than her.
