so this was more of a heist novel so i am a bit on the fence about the plot overall. however, it was just as competently written as always and i enjoyed it.

This book was another good one in the series. Charlotte is trying to lose some weight (why is this even necessary?) so the usual constant mentions of her eating habits is much less in this book than in the previous books. I was actually able to enjoy this one.

In this Lady Sherlock mystery we see Mrs. Watsons past in the form of an old friend pop up with a desperate plea for help infiltrating a ball in order to steal a priceless art piece. I love how Charlotte gets so lost in her disguises and in this story we see the others go undercover to recover what Mrs. Watson’s friend desperately wants. I love the continued interaction between all the characters but especially Charlotte/Ash and Livia/Stephen.

I have to admit, The Art of Theft was my least favorite among the other books, but it was still such an enjoyable read. More than anything, I appreciated the appearance of Lieutenant Atwood from My Beautiful Enemy! OMG!! The practice combat scene between him and one of my favorite heroes of all time, Lord Ingram? YES, PLEASE. It's so awesome how all of Sherry Thomas' characters exist within the same world.

I can't wait for the next installment which is coming out in 3 days! Woohoo!!

Sherry Thomas' Lady Sherlock series is one of the most intricately plotted series that I'm aware of. I often reread the previous book in the series, just to make sure that I'm fully caught up on where all the players are, and which characters' activities/fates were unrevealed. That's not a criticism at all -- I like the fact that Thomas has complex threads and motivations for all of the different characters. Sometimes they disappear from the narrative for a while, but that doesn't mean that they're gone -- they're just waiting their turn.

This entry in the series gives new perspective and history on Mrs. Watson, in particular (a welcome deep-dive into her history), as well as new challenges and opportunities for Lydia. And of course, there's the relationship between Ash and Charlotte, which continues as a slow-burn, forcing both of them to think through the developments in the previous volume, and really consider what their romance might mean to them.

I'm thoroughly satisfied, and looking forward to rereading.
