The first book that I've every read that made me want to be a playwright. The emotive capacity of Ian McEwan is never ending and forever evolving. A true master of the genre.

3.5 rounded down. I'd probably give the story 2 stars, but added more for the book's readability. I finished it in just a few days because it was short and easy to read. The main story was mostly interesting but it didn't feel like there was enough to it for a whole book. In support of that observation, about half the book was focused on a separate story that I didn't like or expect. I felt a bit tricked because I decided to read the book based on what I thought it was about, only to spend half the time reading about something else I didn't care for.

I always love his prose and I got caught into the cases of this English judge. I did find that the novel was more of a "slice of life" than a real constructed storyline.

Makes me think about the difference between my job and my calling, and where I put boundaries in my life. Are they in the right places? Interesting questions but I didn't really enjoy the story that much. The writing is excellent and it's a quick read but I'm not sure that I would recommend it to anyone.

This is McEwan shinning. Fiona's husband wants an open marriage. She's preoccupied with something and it is not their marriage. She's not giving in. 

So we've got that thing going on. The long time relationship that has strayed from the road of passion. 

And we also have this case that Fiona has to decide. A young boy whose religion will not allow him to have a blood transfusion. His family does not want him to have one. The boy does not want one. But his doctors say he needs one to live. 

Fiona has his life in her hands.

It's a short book but POW!

A wobbly 3. Needed to be longer to have the impact on me that it needed. Obviously enjoyed the subject matter as it's law. Really rickety about 3/4 of the way in but managed to redeem itself by the end. Don't know if this is how McEwan normally writes but I'll be checking out On Chesil Beach in the future. Liked it.
