The Crippled God

The Crippled God A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen

Steven Erikson โ€” 2011
The Bonehunters are marching to Kolanse, and to an unknown fate. Tormented and exhausted, they are an army on the brink of mutiny. But Adjunct Tavore will not relent. If she can hold her forces together, if the fragile alliances she has forged can survive and if it is within her power, one final act remains. For Tavore Paran means to challenge the gods. Ranged against Tavore and her allies are formidable foes. The Fokrul Assail are drawing upon a terrible power; their desire is to cleanse the world - to eradicate every civilization, to annihilate every human - in order to begin anew. The Elder Gods, too, are seeking to return. And to do so, they will shatter the chains that bind a force of utter devastation and release her from her eternal prison. It seems that, once more, there will be dragons in the world. And in Kurald Galain, where the once-lost city of Kharkanas has been found, thousands have gathered upon the First Shore. Commanded by Yedan Derryg, they await the coming of the Tiste Liosan. Are they truly ready to die in the name of an empty city and a queen with no subjects? In every world there comes a time when choice is no longer an option - a moment when the soul is laid bare and there is nowhere left to turn. And when this last hard truth is faced, when compassion is a virtue on its knees, what is there left to do?Now that time is come - now is the moment to proclaim your defiance and make a stand... And so begins the final cataclysmic chapter in Steven Erikson's extraordinary, genre-defining 'Malazan Book of the Fallen'.

Unexpected turn of events. Great read. It was worth reading all 10 books. Going to miss Fiddler, Kalam, Quick Ben and Bottle

Wow! What a journey it has been since I struggled to get into Gardens of the Moon over seven years ago. It's been the best literary journey I have undertaken in my life. This series is the benchmark of all literature I have been exposed to (and I have been exposed to more literature than most people). In this last chapter of the Malazan Book of the Fallen Steven Erikson broke my heart in the best way possible. Eucatastrophe Tolkien called it, the good ending that breaks your heart. Steven Erikson is a master storyteller and makes you fall in love with hundreds of characters across the series because he makes almost every character in the series a main character in some way. The series is a tapestry of thousands of lives 'converging' and making up this beautiful epic tale of the fallen.

I should not have read this through my vacation, because this is the SADDEST BOOK EVER. I read the last few chapters on the boat from Baku to Turkmenbashi, and had to find a hidey place away from the truckers, crew and other passengers so I could CRY MY EYES OUT. OVER THIS FUCKING BOOK AND ALL THE ONES BEFORE. Best. Series. Ever.

Wow. Just wow. It took me a long time to get to this point, but it was so worth it. I can't say much about the book itself because I would just have to mark the whole review as a spoiler, but what I will say is Erikson has truly created a masterpiece. Having so many characters and plot-lines makes it really difficult to tie together, and sometimes authors flop at the end or just never finish. Erikson is not one of those authors. He has one of the largest worlds, if not the largest, in fantasy fiction and yet he perfectly finishes this amazingly epic series. If you're reading this review and you haven't yet started Malazan, now is the time to jump into Erikson's vast and beautiful world. Starting Gardens of the Moon is a daunting task: a huge book that is super confusing with 9 more super huge books to follow. I'm here to tell you that it is all worth it. This book, and this series, now proudly sits at the top of my favourites list and will likely not move from its position.
