I've said it before, but James Rollins is a long-time personal favourite for his mix of action, adventure, science and history. I've read the majority of the books in the Sigma series and each is still as entertaining as the last. The writing isn't incredible but the research Rollins puts into each book definitely shows.

The Sigma Force novels are some of my favourite guilty pleasures of action novels. Rollins throws some ridiculous science and history into a mix with hyper-educated secret agents who must save the world from extinction-level disasters. They are all seriously fun! The Demon Crown takes on the idea that perhaps the modern world would not appreciate confronting biology from the past. This is a current topic given how ancient viruses are making a comeback as the permifrost melts. In this case, wasps are the big bad that we need to contend with. Really big, destructive wasps... This 13th volume is a return to form for Rollins who got a bit sidetracked with character development that felt frustrating and drawn out the past few books. Plus, he finally seems to be able to write for Seichan without me wanting to bang my head on a deck! Most of the time. In any case, this was fast, fun, and exciting! A great read to help me break my novel slump :)

I always enjoy the combination of science, politics and adventure in this series.

First things first, I knew what I was going to get from this book before I started it because I’ve become used to this series. So, it was a good read and met my expectations. It felt nice to meet some of my favorite characters, whom I have loved for over a decade now. I always enjoy the action sequences in the Sigma Force series and they were awesome here too. I absolutely loved the descriptions of the city of Tallinn (especially it’s Library) and the Salt mines in Krakow. Mr. Rollins always manages to make me want to visit the places he so wonderfully describes in his books. But the book also dragged at a lot of places and I skimmed quite a few pages. I was not disappointed, but I hope that one of these days, my expectations will be exceeded too.
