The Fates Divide

Veronica Roth2018
#1 New York Times Bestseller! In the second book of the Carve the Mark duology, globally bestselling Divergent author Veronica Roth reveals how Cyra and Akos fulfill their fates. The Fates Divide is a richly imagined tale of hope and resilience told in four stunning perspectives. The lives of Cyra Noavek and Akos Kereseth are ruled by their fates, spoken by the oracles at their births. The fates, once determined, are inescapable. Akos is in love with Cyra, in spite of his fate: He will die in service to Cyra’s family. And when Cyra’s father, Lazmet Noavek—a soulless tyrant, thought to be dead—reclaims the Shotet throne, Akos believes his end is closer than ever. As Lazmet ignites a barbaric war, Cyra and Akos are desperate to stop him at any cost. For Cyra, that could mean taking the life of the man who may—or may not—be her father. For Akos, it could mean giving his own. In a stunning twist, the two will discover how fate defines their lives in ways most unexpected. Praise for Carve the Mark: #1 New York Times bestseller * Wall Street Journal bestseller * USA Today bestseller * #1 IndieBound bestseller “Roth skillfully weaves the careful world-building and intricate web of characters that distinguished Divergent.” —VOYA (starred review) “Roth offers a richly imagined, often brutal world of political intrigue and adventure, with a slow-burning romance at its core.” —ALA Booklist

This was easy to pick up and get back into the story, even a year or so after reading the first one! I enjoyed how the story progressed and culminated, though there were a few very cheesy things here and there that I thought could have been nixed. Overall I thought this was a good end to the duology.

Ok, I LOVED this conclusion! It was fast paced yet emotional and with a lot of twists and turns I didn't see coming. I would like more stories in this world, there is still so much to explore.

Okay.............there are some bits that I looooved, but there are some that really bothered me. I liked all the relation between the characters and stuff, but! I really was hoping a something more with the whole idea of the fates...It seemed too rushed for the way that Veronica Roth usually goes and deals with her stories. in the rest I liked the entire story, but was expecting a lot more. I guess Veronica wanted to write a softer book than the divergent saga.

What a complete disappointment. The first novel in the duology captured and held my interest. This novel had too many boxes to tick, and because of all the reaching, it fell flat and the plot did not climax in proportion to the conclusion. It seems like bestselling authors these days are too busy making everyone happy to focus on developing (or concluding, in this case) a complex, articulate story. In seemingly trying to please everyone, the book was empty carbs instead of a healthy, fulfilling meal.

4.5 stars! The first half of this book felt a bit slower than the first. Also I know it was necessary, but I didn’t always like having the extra povs besides the main couple. I feel like I liked the plot in the first book better, but once I got to about 50% of this one and the plot twist!! I read the rest of it in a day. I love the ending. This was a super fun Duology, highly recommend!

“Death is not the only punishment you can give a person. You can also give them nightmares.” I felt that this book was far better than the previous one for many reasons. As I highlighted in my previous post, I felt that we didn’t know enough about Cyra and Akos’ respective families. In this book we got to know more about the Noaveks and the Keresiths. But I still didn’t know enough about Ylira Noavek and Aoseh Keresith. What I also liked was that Cyra and Akos’ relationship wasn't the main focus of the plot and their relationships with other people were highlighted more. What stood out to me about the world-building of this book was that the author explained what each planet was known for and what each planet worshipped. This greatly helped in differentiating the planets since so many of them were introduced. I do feel that Eijeh could have been highlighted more and more of his POVs would have been appreciated. His POVs that were there, were an interesting read. Though Lazmet Noavek was an important part of the book towards the end, he was killed before I could actually get to know him. So we needed more of Lazmet Noavek. Isae Benesit POVs should have also been a part of the book, as they would have been pretty interesting. Even more scenes about her from another person’s POV (except Cici) would have been amazing. Ori Benesit should have also been talked about more and highlighted more before she was killed. I was hoping to know more about her in this book but I was disappointed. Still, I like this book more than the last one. Book Rating- 4 stars Age Rating- 12/13+

So many thoughts and all I can say is that I loved it. I wish we would have gotten more of this universe and this lore. It is so intensely good and I’m so happy
