After reading A Boy Called Christmas by Matt Haig last Christmas, I asked for the other 2 Christmas books and was not disappointed when I picked this one up this year, Full of Humour, Fun and magic it’s a great book to get lost in and just let your imagination run wild!

Dieses süße Weihnachtsbuch zog mich allein durch das großartige Cover an und auch der Klappentext gibt so einiges her. Rückblickend würde ich Matt Haigs Buch als mein liebstes Weihnachtsbuch aus diesem Jahr beschreiben, was an mehreren Punkten liegt. Zunächst ist es einfach wunderschön gestaltet, denn Innen setzt sich der Zeichenstil vom Cover in wunderschönen Schwarz-Weiß-Illustrationen fort. 
Die Geschichte selbst spielt im viktorianischen Zeitalter, was mich zunächst erst einmal überrascht hat, dann jedoch sehr gefreut hat. Das Zeitalter passt so perfekt zur Adventszeit und fängt diese ganze Atmosphäre so perfekt ein. Doch auch das Leid, dass zu der Zeit nicht unausweichlich ist muss eingefangen werden und genau dadurch werden die Weihnachtswunder, die passieren gleich noch mal ein bisschen weihnachtlicher. Sogar Charles Dickens hat eine wichtige Rolle im Buch inne und das war für mich eine herrliche Überraschung.
Neben der Geschichte von Amelia, die einfach wahnsinnig berührend war, spielt ein Großteil des Buches auch bei den Wichteln in Wichtelgrund. Die versuchen ihr Dorf und somit auch Weihnachten von den Trollen zu retten und hier gab es einige skurrile Szenen, von denen ich an dieser Stelle jedoch nicht mehr verraten möchte. Eines meiner Highlights war, der Dialekt der Trolle, die einfach mal Hessisch reden. Für mich als Hessin natürlich ein kleines Highlight.
Einige Stellen des Buches aber besonders das Ende haben mich richtig zu Tränen gerührt. Es war absolut rührend geschrieben und ganz klar ist sicher, dass Matt Haig einfach schreiben kann. Muss ich das an dieser Stelle noch einmal erwähnen?
Fazit: Das Mädchen, das Weihnachten rettete verzaubert uns mit der Atmosphäre des viktorianischen Zeitalters und berührt den Leser ebenso sehr, wie es ihn mit seinen süßen und witzigen Szenen unterhält. Die Zeichnungen haben mich ebenso sehr verzaubert, wie die detailreichen Szenen, die Matt Haig beschreibt und so wurde dieser Titel zu meinem Weihnachtshighlight.

Read to the kids. Bit scary for the 5 year old in parts but she loved the story so much so always wanted to keep going. 8 year old enjoyed it too.

I really wanted to love this, but I just didn’t. I thought that it was a solid enough premise, but I found the execution to be a bit lacklustre.

• Amelia was a brilliant protagonist. My favourite part of the story. We see her throughout the years as she’s so hopeful and then losing that hope the more time passes in the workhouse. Loved seeing her journey.

• I somewhat enjoyed Elfhelm, it was a pretty cute place. Also enjoyed learning about the trolls.

• My main issue was the pacing of the story. I felt like it just dragged so much at times and I know that as a child I would have been bored. A lot of the story was standing around talking and my younger self much preferred fast paced action packed stories.

• I think the premise and theme is a good one. It’s about hope and magic and believing in things you don’t know are there. It’s a nice enough message but I’ve just seen it executed in better ways.

All in all, if you’re looking for a fun lighthearted holiday read, you’ll probably enjoy this for the most part.

I listened to this on audiobook and really enjoyed it. It picks up not long after the first book A boy called Christmas and is more action packed than the first in my opinion. Some twists were obvious to me but then I'm not really the target audience. I'm looking forward to recommending them to my nephews and I even went and got book 3 to read too :)
