I have not been this disappointed in a work of narrative history in quite some time. The first page set a terrible tone for me with the nearly constant use of the passive voice as well as the narrative that appeared more like bad historical fiction than history. I kept hoping that the book would improve but it never did. The title sets the reader up to expect to hear stories of women like those chronicled in "Hidden Figures." What Kiernan gave the readers was the haphazard story of a handful of women all who ended up getting married and having babies but not contributing in significant ways on the project. I do not discount their roles. However, I have no idea why Kiernan chose the women she did. I have no idea why she thought it a good idea to alternate between their stories, as many as there were, and the history of the project told at a top down governmental level, adding yet another perspective to the mish-mash of the narrative.
I do not recommend this book at all.
