dowell is one of the most human narrators i’ve ever come across. ford writes him perfectly. this book was a very strange read and i didn’t enjoy the traditional plot as much as i enjoyed dowell’s inner monologue. seeing the way he thought and the progression/constant shifts of his discourse was beautiful and powerful. why did so many people have to die in this romance novel though

Perhaps I haven't read a novel as swift as Madox's. Turning pages effortlessly, whilst shocking tournures make way to way wicked events... and the show must, in best cases, go on.
What I hoped to be a youth's blissful classic, turned out to be a dreadful prosecution of good hearted chaps in the name of crual and monstrous correctness.
Maybe the closest American writer to Russian Dostoievsky...

I was utterly, completely lost through the entire book. Not only was it hard to separate and define the primary characters but it was almost impossible to discern the identity of the narrator and his relation to the various characters. The narrative jumped around in nearly a "stream-of-consciousness" fashion. The chronology darted forward only to be yanked back in head-spinning motions that exacerbated my confusion. There are very few books that enjoyed less than this one.
I do not recommend it at all.
