The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly
Reviews

Ahh this was SO good and a lot better then i expected
It was SO SAD though like how has a book about a chicken made me this sad

“A sprout is the mother of flowers,” Sprout explained. “It breathes, stands firm against rain and wind, keeps the sunlight, and rears blindingly white flowers. If it weren’t for sprouts, there’d be no trees. A sprout is vital.” What an apt name for the fiercely brave protagonist of this book. I don't completely empathise with her as the book progresses, and I might never get the chance to in my life, because I don't plan on having kids. But I understand the rest of the social commentary in this, and I find it spectacular and brilliant. If I ever end up adopting a child in the future, I want to revisit this book again, and maybe gain another fresh perspective.

** spoiler alert ** I came upon this book on a list of "must reads on a grey day". Let me tell you, I read it in 3 days (although I'm an extremely slow reader so you might read it in a few hours) and it made me feel so- unsatisfied? satisfied? I don't know, there were moments I wanted a different ending but then I felt like it was perfect!

oh my god. i’ll come back when it isn’t 01:11.
edit + actual review: an amazing, bittersweet journey of self discovery, love, and motherhood. her story is raw and emotional, but sprout is a character that is so human in her wants and desires that she can make any reader yearn with her.
aka screaming crying throwing up

"The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly" is a short story that focuses on different aspects of life like parenthood, dreams, freedom, disabilities, and courage. It shows how hard life can be when you follow the customs and how challenging it can become when you rebel. Freedom comes with a cost, but certainly, defiance has its taste. I loved this book and would say nothing else but recommend it. This rebellious hen named Sprout can teach you many lessons.

Highlights

“That’s all there is to it. We look different, so we don’t understand each other’s inner thoughts, but we cherish each other in our own way. I respect you.”
