I listened to this as an audiobook, and while it was fascinating listening, I didn't quite get how this became such a seminal and influential work. Perhaps it's that I've heard so much about it (the hero's journey, the "monomyth") from literally everyone who talks about modern storytelling, that the contents are too familiar to seem innovative. Perhaps I just missed too much and I need to re-read it as a physical book.

It drives the psychic energies into depth and activates the lost continent of unconscious infantile and archetypal images. The result, of course, may be a desintegration of consciousness more or less complete (neurosis, psychosis: the plight of spellbound Daphne); but on the other hand, if the personality is able to absorb and integrate the new forces, there will be experienced an almost superhuman degree of self-consciousness and masterful control."
Any writer should read this book, the reason why it will help you make better heroes.
“El héroe de las mil caras” es un libro fantástico y extraordinario. Joseph Campbell desmenuza los mitos y los condensa en un sólo esquema, presentando la teoría del monomito. Este concepto nos plantea más o menos lo siguiente: Todos los mitos son básicamente el mismo donde un héroe recibe un llamado, se embarca en una aventura, pasa una serie de pruebas que lo transforman y luego vuelve pero cambiado. Este breve resumen es apenas la punta del iceberg que nos trae este libro. Campbell empieza a analizar diferentes mitos (Navajo, Pueblo, Maori, cristianos, budistas, etc) y nos muestra la evolución del héroe en cada etapa del camino y el significado del mito. El uso del psicoanálisis para investigar y comprender los mitos le dio una óptica nueva, interesante y sumamente reveladora a los mitos. No sólo tienen un aspecto cohesionador alrededor de una comunidad, demás esta decir que aportan conocimiento al oyente. También son una forma de hacernos crecer. El héroe de todos los mitos experimenta un crecimiento espiritual que lo hace madurar. Mientras más me sumergía en la lectura de este libro, cada vez estaba más seguro que los mitos y antiguas leyendas tenían una función que iba mucho más allá de reunirse alrededor de una fogata. Podían hacer que el espíritu humano creciera y madurara hacia una adultez necesaria y requerida. Campbell no sólo desmenuza los mitos bajo microscopio, también critica sutilmente a la sociedad actual haciendo presente que la falta de este conocimiento popular ha logrado que permanezcamos en una situación de infancia casi permanente. El libro es un estudio psicoanalítico, por lo cual la lectura se me hizo muy difícil en algunos momentos, sin embargo da gusto leer algo como esto. Un libro imperdible e imprescindible para entender no sólo la fuerza de los mitos, si no la necesidad de ellos y la sabiduría antigua que nos instaba a crecer espiritualmente. Algo que se ha perdido en el mundo moderno.
As a Star Wars fan, I have had this book on my TBR for a long time, so when my book club voted for this to be our book, I was very excited. Wow, this book is timing with a lifetime of collecting and treading together the mythologies and belief systems of this world. It was a great book for me, someone who doesn't know a lot about mythologies. There is so much to take in, and so I think I will probably have to reread it at some point.
