The House of Always

The House of Always

Jenn Lyons2021
For fans of Brandon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss, The House of Always is the fourth epic fatnasy in Jenn Lyons' Chorus of Dragons series that began with The Ruin of Kings. What if you were imprisoned for all eternity? In the aftermath of the Ritual of Night, everything has changed. The Eight Immortals have catastrophically failed to stop Kihrin's enemies, who are moving forward with their plans to free Vol Karoth, the King of Demons. Kihrin has his own ideas about how to fight back, but even if he's willing to sacrifice everything for victory, the cost may prove too high for his allies. Now they face a choice: can they save the world while saving Kihrin, too? Or will they be forced to watch as he becomes the very evil they have all sworn to destroy.

I swear that The Chorus of Dragons series gets better with each book. I have such mixed feelings about finishing up "The House of Always", which is book four of the series. On the one hand this was a fantastic read, but on the other it means that there is only one more book left and I'm not ready to leave this world yet. I had such a hard time trying to write a spoiler free review for this book since it is the fourth in the series. I feel like the entire series has been building up to this moment and the outcome did not disappoint. I will say that Jenn Lyons still has lots of surprises up her sleeve for the reader. After the last book I thought that she was going to follow the George RRR Martin route and start killing off the main characters, but now I'm not so sure. I'm such a sucker for a happy ending though that I really hope that all the main characters make it and ride off into the sunset so to speak. In terms of the characters themselves, I continue to enjoy getting to know them and uncovering their secrets. Being a fan of the idea of soulmates and reincarnation I've also really enjoyed finding out more about the main characters past lives and the ties that bind them together. I also love the romance aspect of the story and how well done it was. You'd think that with an epic fantasy like this there would be no room for romance, but Jenn Lyons managed to develop the individual love stories so organically. This is also probably the only series I've read where I found myself invested in all the couples and not just one or two. I could probably go on and on for hours about "The House of Always" and the Chorus of Dragons series. It is definitely a 5 out of 5 read for me. If you enjoy epic fantasy then you will love this book and this series. For more reviews like this check out my blog at http://reviewsbym.com

I’d assumed I’d either have solved the issue by the time I met up with them (and thus it wouldn’t be a problem) or I would be dead and it… wouldn’t be a problem. It hadn’t occurred to me that I might end up in a between state where I was dead but also available to be yelled at.

“My strong Red,” he told her. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome, Blue,” she said primly.

Teraeth had known two things when he’d seen his mother, Khaemezra, toss Urthaenriel down to the floor: she’s unwittingly broken her magical control of him, and if he hesitated for even a moment, she’d take Kihrin’s life.

Teraeth made his choice. It wasn’t even a hard choice.
