This book is amazing--It's a poetic, love-laden, ecstatic celebration of the life and works of Margaret Wise Brown. The illustrations are simply gorgeous, and share the text's obvious fondness for its subject. Having said all of that, it feels a LOT more like a book for adults who love children's literature than a book for children. Especially when Mac Barnett directly asks the reader questions about their opinions about what books should be for young readers. "Do you think that if life is sometimes scary that books should sometimes be scary?" It felt a bit contrived and condescending. I have a hard time imagining a kid loving this book as much as me, a children's librarian.
