This was a good, likable novel. It's just not a topic or genre I would readily pick up myself. War-retelling historical fiction novels aren't really my thing. When I think of a great Civil War novel, it's usually Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. 

That being said, this is totally a book for a history buff or Civil War aficionado. Decent writing, strong characters. Not the worst book I've ever been required to read. Doesn't hurt that I got an average of 98% on the two papers I wrote for the book test.

I wanted to read a book about Gettysburg and 2 different friends who were Civil War enthusiasts recommended this book. This was definitely a great recommendation. The book caught me in and I could hardly put it down. I especially appreciated Michael Shaara taking time to develop what could have been going on in the minds of some of the main men involved in the conflict. This book served to increase my appetite for well done historical novels. I especially have the desire to look into the life of Longstreet and Chamberlain some more.

I don't like descriptions of battles. In my opinion you can say "and a game of capture the hill was played only real people were killed" and be done with it. I don't understand war. I've said it before. It is so absolutely ridiculous. And when I read about the people involved and their passion for the fight, I'm even more confused. 

I AM fascinated by the world within war. The casualties. The battle scars. The people. 

I like the story of how this book came about and became popular much, much better than the actual book. The man can't write. I'm sorry but that is just that. And it's about one, no maybe two actual battles. The whole damn book! Anyway. I should have known better.
