It was one of the most popular English-language novels of its time, and helped establish Cooper as one of the first world-famous American writers. Although stylistic and narrative flaws left it open to criticism since its publication, and its length and distinctive prose style have reduced its appeal to later readers, The Last of the Mohicans remains embedded in American literature courses. It is the most famous of the Leatherstocking Tales.

Speed read this for my literature class. I'm not used to this kind of writing style so I had difficulty processing the events. The narrative is very very rich... the kind that causes you to space out—only to realize an important event had just taken place 😂 I don't really have much to say about the story because I failed to connect with the characters. Nevertheless, yay for finishing another classic!

I found the old language really hard to follow. 

The introduction was really informative and really set the book up in a very understandable way. Honestly, it was boring at times. It is an old language, and I found myself thinking I could reimagine this book as sci-fi. In other times I tried to keep track of historical moments alluded to in the narrative. There were lots of references that I didn't understand. Talking in the third person is always super confusing for me, and it wasn't until halfway through the book that I knew there were multiple girls. 

There is an undeniable point of racism, especially with the whole concept of colonialism. However, unexpecting there was also them underestimating the Native American people. Having read The Pohutukawa Tree and several other Indigenous narratives this seemed to not take on the noble savage trope. 

I know I want to watch the film now. But will unlikely want to read again.

Uncas was the last warrior of the Mohican clan. He faced many problems. Eventually, he overcame all problems. Cooper is at his best in this illustrated classic. His style is fine. This novel is a "must-read" for all teenagers and young people. They would relish this piece of fiction. The original flavor of these classics has been carefully retained in these abridged versions. Must be read by the youth, housewives, student and executives.
