Farther didn’t spend his free time checking the mortar on the chimney stack or setting up a theodolite in the back garden, so it seemed unfair that a priest should have to be holy all the time. But perhaps it didn’t work like that. Perhaps being a priest was like being a fish. Immersion for life.

This is an almost perfect book. Elements of intrigue, creepy atmosphere, demented faith, and the occult. Plus the writing style is extremely good. The story feels very real, like it could have happened to you. The Loney might be my favorite read for this year.

Meine Meinung: Das Cover des Buches zieht magisch an und hat man es erst einmal in den Händen, so wird man auch direkt vom Klappentext begeistert. Loney scheint alles zu haben, was ein guter Roman braucht. Eine mysteriöse Atmosphäre, die viel zum Feeling des Buches beiträgt, eine Leiche, die auf ein Verbrechen hinweist, das gelöst werden will und einen Hinweis darauf, dass der Schreibstil brillant ist, viele von dem Buch begeistert waren. Und doch schwingt da ein gewisses Misstrauen mit, wenn man die Worte Glaubensgemeinschaft und pilgern liest. Es gibt einen ersten Hinweis darauf, dass das Buch tief in einer religiösen Thematik verankert ist und das ist der Punkt, der im ersten Moment ein wenig zurückweichen lässt.
Es stimmt, die Religion spielt einen großen Part in der Geschichte. Sie ist die, die die Protagonisten motiviert, die das Geschehen vorantreibt oder es auch manchmal im Vorangehen behindert. Religion ist ein sehr schwieriges Thema in Romanen, denn sie ist kein großer Teil der Gesellschaft mehr und viele stehen ihr skeptisch gegenüber. Vor allen Dingen, wenn man das aktuelle Geschehen mit verfolgt. Andrew Michael Hurley hat diese Thematik aber gekonnt im Werk eingebaut. Sie ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil der Handlung, wird aber kritisch betrachtet und gibt dem Leser zahlreiche Denkanstöße. Das ganze jedoch, ohne zu wertend zu wirken. Das Buch offenbart zwei Sichten auf den Katholizismus, die ihn nicht in eine Schublade stecken sondern vielmehr dem Leser näher bringen können.
Die Geschichte erfährt der Leser aus der Sicht Tontos. Er ist Hannys jüngerer Bruder und trotzdem ist er in der Position, in der er sich um seinen Bruder kümmern soll, denn wie so oft gesagt wird, ist Hanny ein Junge im Körper eines Mannes. Er spricht kaum und ist mehr Kind in seinem Verhalten, was auf eine Behinderung schließen lässt. Hannys und Tontos Mutter glaubt fest daran, dass Gott Hanny heilen kann und so schwört sie auf eine Pilgereise nach Loney, die, zum ersten Mal nach dem Tod des alten Pfarrers, wieder absolviert wird. Der neue Pfarrer kann jedoch nicht alle Mitglieder der streng gläubigen Gemeinde begeistern und Hannys Mutter fürchtet, dass ihr Sohn so nicht geheilt werden kann. An all das erinnert sich Tonto viele Jahre später als in Loney eine Babyleiche gefunden wird. Es lässt den Leser von Anfang an nicht los, denn man hat das vage Gefühl, dass die Pilgergruppe in diesen Vorfall verwickelt ist und das ganze Buch über suchen wir nach einer Antwort auf den Verdacht und werden dabei sehr unterhalten. 
Was zu einem großen Teil zu dieser Handlung beiträgt ist die Kulisse, die Hurley in seinem Werk geschaffen hat. Loney ist ein verlassenes Dörfchen an der Küste Englands. Nebel, eine hohe Luftfeuchtigkeit und somit nasskaltes Wetter prägen das Leben dort und man muss nicht dort gewesen sein, um zu erahnen, wie die Atmosphäre dort ist. Unheimlich, mystisch und bedrückend. Sie schwingt beim Lesen mit und hebt so die Spannung des Buches an. Besonders auch die Szenen nachts und die Begegnungen mit den wenigen verbliebenen Bewohnern Loneys sind noch einmal ein ganzes Stück atmosphärischer und haben sehr zur Stimmung des Buches beigetragen.
Fazit: Mit Loney hat Andrew Michael Hurley ein gestochen scharfes Werk geschaffen, das besonders durch seine Atmosphäre und das Geheimnis, das es verbirgt, wirkt. Hin und wieder gab es einige Längen und die religiöse Thematik kann anfangs skeptisch betrachtet werden. Kritiker haben aber recht, wenn sie dieses Buch loben und wir haben hoffentlich nicht zum letzten Mal von Hurley gehört.

Haunting and chilling - but I was left wanting at the end.

I can't even...

This book is so strange and there's a lot of mystery around it, you're not really sure you can trust the narrator... but all in all, it was quite an interesting story, even if a bit spooky at times. Just don't expect to know everything that happened. As they say in the books, there are different versions of the truth, so you can choose whatever you think is the real truth here.
