Down-and-out drunk Terry Lennox has a problem: his millionaire wife is dead and he needs to get out of LA fast. So he turns to his only friend in the world: Philip Marlowe, Private Investigator. The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler is the last of seven mysteries featuring Philip Marlowe. I decided to give Raymond Chandler a try since I had one of his books on hand.

Marlowe tries to do the right thing by helping Terry Lennox whom he found falling down drunk. Lennox though after a brief friendship flees the country leaving Marlowe fingered as an accomplice in the murder of his wife.

The book is set in 1950s Los Angeles. It's a grittier, lonelier and more pessimistic view of the city than that of his contemporary, Perry Mason. Chandler shows how easy it is to be alone in a city full of people if one wants to be.

first book i was able to finish after quite a slump. really enjoyed this, but it was hard to read this without thinking of altman's rendition. luckily this is genius and dense and layered in a completely different way than the movie. i liked how much more time the book spends with lennox, among other things. some great one liners and empty observations. really loved this.

My first Raymond Chandler novel. Enjoyed it alright but found it a little slow and plodding. Very little happens for about 50% of the book starting after a couple hours in.

The style is excellent, though. That alone will keep me reading the other Chandler novels.

There was a time that this genre of detective fiction was all I read. I needed a break but this reminded me how much I enjoy it… maybe just in smaller doses.

Really enjoyed this one. It had everything: grande dame, hardboiled cops, corrupt system, rants agains the corrupt system, etc etc. You could say every cliche in the book, and this book had it, but Chandler invented it!
